Just read press report on the accident which killed 4 cyclist in North Wales.

He has been fined just £180 !!!!

He had three "seriously" bald tires, when he skidded out of control before hitting the cyclists. Judge ruled that he hit black-ice so didn't make a difference, and therefore not deemed responsible.

ing hell, the worlds gone mad.

Why risk going to prison using a gun or knife?
Just use your car... and pay the fine...

Did he intend to do it? No.

Were his actions sufficiently negligent that you could blame him for what happened? Not to a significant extent.

It wouldn't make any difference if the crash had killed 100 children. It was an accident and the driver of the car has been judged to have had little responsibility for what happened.

So what is wrong with the judgement? Nothing.

Oh do f*%k off, read the report, the cyclists were just as daft for being there, the motorist was not speeding, pissed or on a mobile phone, accidents had already occured there due to the ice inc a police car! questions are being asked as to why the road wasn't gritted. He had 3 illegal tyres which paid no contribution to the accident and was punished accordingly.

It was an accident, tragic but an accident nontheless and I bet the driver is feeling pretty shit about it.

I'm sorry but your post has made me very angry!

Firstly the judge ruled that the state of his tyres would have made no difference to the accident. He would have had the accident with tyres in good condition, it was a very unfortunate accident - nothing more.

The charges that were brought against had NOTHING to do with the accident itself! Apart from the fact the tyres were found to be under the legal limit.

He was charged and found guilty of having bald tyres, case closed!

You don't think the three bald tires had a contributing factor?

Why were there not a pile of cars pilled up on the corner?, or was he the first guy to hit the black ice?

emley - where are you details of 'seriously bald'?!? All the reports i've seen just say 'defective', which could be something as simple as a sidewall bulge (poss caused by accident!), and it took them 5 months to release that nugget of info. If you've more info, great, but if that's hearsay then FFS take another look at your post.

I don't know all the facts, but most (including the judge's summary) point to black ice, which could have happened to anyone...YOU could find yourself in the same position, would YOU want strangers judging you on the basis of hearsay?!?

I don't think tank tracks would have helped on black ice.

If you hit black ice you have a problem whether your tyres are in good condition or bald. Ice doesn't provide any friction!

It was already stated that a number of cars had crashed there including a police car before this unforunate ACCIDENT occured.

I do remember hearing about this, and yes it was a complete accident (before anyone shouts at me), but come on your saying that having 3 (illegal) tyres didnt make any difference to the circumstances.

I think, that if the guy driving didnt care enough to change his tyres when they illegal i wonder what else he cares to let slip .....

However i would say that he will live with this incident the rest of his life not something i would want to ever have on my mind

I wouldn't pretend to know, but in court it was decided that the purpose of tread on a tyre is to displace water, and that the ability of the tyre to displace water would make no difference to how well it gripped on black ice.

Daft for being there?!?!?! WTF!

they were out for a club ride on a normal road, funnily enough they were on road bikes on a road!!!

im not arguing about the verdict but is it their fault because they were in the right place at the wrong time?

i was wandering when this would come up

Anyway i agree with the fine he was punished for the offence of 3 defective tyres

he hit ice and would not matter how new the tyres are the ice still affords zero grip unless you have studs or something else wacky.

christ on a bike! it's judgemental tts like you that cause all this blame culture. He had 3 defective tyres, not bald, defective. Have you never driven a vehicle in your life that has had a defective tyre? how often do you check to see the inside wall isn't bulging on one of them?

Just think mate, the but for the grace of god go I, next time you could be involved in a tragedy and see how you like it when the Sun readers of the world all shout for their pound of flesh

It raises an interesting point as to whether there is actually more grip on black ice with a low tyre tread than with brand new tyres. Similar to slicks on a race track.

I agree it seems to have been a tragic accident.

ok wanker, how about the fact that it was an icy road, one cyclist had already fallen off, as a cyclist you are going to be pretty aware of ice on the road. Me? I'd be in the snug or somewhere less bloody dangerous

If you're out for a training ride, you go out whether it's sunny, raining, snowing etc. It's not a pick and choose thing. They were on a major road that would be more likely to be salted so LESS dangerous than most routes. The authorities should reconsider their salting schedules but this was just a tragic accident, no one's fault.

it's a fair cop

I do get brassed off when the lynch mob set out to pull some poor bastard apart, who may already be going through hell, in the name of revenge and based on little more than snippets from the Sun. I'll go and have a lie down now
