Lost bus driver's bridge crash

A bus driver crashed his double-decker into a bridge after asking two teenage passengers for directions.

The 14-year-old girls were navigating from an A-Z after the driver got lost en-route to Dudley.

The bus crashed into a railway bridge on Victoria Road in Tipton.

Phil Bateman, a spokesman for bus company Travel West Midlands, said thankfully no one was seriously hurt, but the driver has been suspended.

'They were navigating'

Twenty firefighters were called to the scene on Tuesday night to remove the bus from under the bridge.

A fire service spokesman said the bridge was 13ft high, and the bus needed clearance height of 14ft 6ins.

"It seems the driver was new to the area and had got lost," he said.

"There were only two girls on the bus so he called them downstairs from where they had been sitting on the top deck, and they were navigating from an A-Z."

I know this sounds a very sexist comment coming from me of all people, but I thought it would get peoples attention.
I think I would have sacked him though, not just suspend him.

BTW I am really crap at navigating so feel somewhat justified in using the title

Asking a woman to navigate is very much like asking Dennis Nilsen to babysit for you..

Ahhh. A subject close to my heart.

I contend my wife is a terrible navigator. But she believes the exact opposite - because she can map read.

Its just funny how on every journey in a new part of the country we end up lost. Every single time. Lost to the point where I am handed the map and told to find out where we are so she can start map reading again.

I am getting SatNav. Its important for my sanity and our marriage!

Hmmmmmmm Women and navigation :blackclouddescends:

"Thats the exit we want" said the gf of the time, pointing backwards with her thumb as we hurtled past the sliproad exit up the M5 at 80mph.

Prior to the advent of Sat-Nav, whenever the missus and I where trying to find our way, and we came to a stop sign, I would ask her which direction. Whichever one she selected, I would always go the opposite and we always ended up where we needed to be...

...The puzzling thing about this is, she is the absolute best navigator when we are on our tours prior to the car shows we attend... (the mind boggles)

Right now the best female navigator that I know of is the Sat-Nav in my X-type. She has a lovely voice and talks to me in English English (can also be set for American English, Spanish, French). It's great hearing American road names in an English accent...

"please follow the (es)S (are)R 4 - 1 - 7 for a quarter of a mile and then sharp right turn"

delightful

(most American would say State Road Four Seventeen in the above)

Cheers

I must defend those Girrls who *can* actually navigate!!! I have been given the title of "Honourary Bloke" by several bloke friends of mine because I *can* navigate. ((Now look at the mess you guys have made spitting your coffee onto your keyboards (again) )) Even as recently as Valentine's weekend, when the BF and I were driving to a secret location (he wanted to surprise me)...'HE' was driving and needed directional assistance. He handed me the map, pointed to the place we had to get to (roughly), and said, "We need to be here". And I got us there...(pats self on back and gets another glass of wine as reward...) There are those of us who can navigate, ya know :waitstobeshotdownintorrentofblokenavigatorabuse: and RobK...no comments from the Peanut Gallery, please

My dad has an amazing sence of direction. Once he has been somewhere once he can get there again without looking at a map, even if it is years since he was last there, no matter how obscure the location. So mum never had to learn to map read, probably why she gets lost going to the local shops.

Personally I go to www.multimap.com/ and print off a map prior to a big trip. Im usually ok getting to the general location but get stumped nailing down the exact road. A lot of the kart tracks I race at tend to be off the beaten track so no one around to ask directions from. In the past I have been in an industrial estate and can hear the karts in the distance but still cant find the track

You don't let het her know where you're going.

You don't tell her 'till the last minute.

She didn't know anyway.

She runs out of fuel before you get there.

Jesus _ could someone carry on before I explode - the pub I'm staying at is still open...

My partner is an excellent navigator, much better than me and I've seen plenty of B and Minor Road action that you wouldn't think of doing if you were by yourself. I guess having to run about quite dense forests as part of her job has helped in this respect.

So while I know plenty of females with dreadful navigation skills (friends and my sister for one) I'm lucky to have a good co-driver to keep me on the right track.

I am female and can navigate. :gasp: Better than Mr Big - who refuses to wear his glasses. The only slight problem is that I don't know my left from my right (sign of having a perfectly balanced mind ). I know the direction - just not the name for it. I usually wave the appropriate hand about and that gets the message across. It does get a bit hairy sometimes as he expects me to navigate while he is doing a Colin McRae impression.
