Need you help Guy's please?
Just recently my Windows Media Player (WMP) is refusing to play ball.
It worked about a month ago, until I installed Musicmatch.
The problem is associated with WAV files, It won't play them! I turned off the WAV association in Musicmatch and defaulted that format back to WMP. WMP initially loads the media player and then I get a window appear that say's,
The operation cannot be performed because the pins are not connected.

What bloody pins?

The windows media help site just says,

You have encountered the following error while using Windows Media Player:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error# 80040209

Sorry, no more help is available for this problem at this time.

As a last ditch bid, I just reinstalled windows and get the same problem.

Any ideas guy's cos there’s a lot of engine rumbles on my PC that I can't listen to.

TYIA for you assistance.

Big Al.

Been having a nose around Microsoft.com and have identified that there's some sort of connection to an error of "IDS_INVALID_BUSINESSID". However, I haven't been able to fathom what that might mean!

I wonder if it's worth you searching in the user groups, for example at:
http://communities.microsoft.com/Newsgroups/default.asp?ICP=windowsmedia&sLCID=US

Try downloading and installing the new media player. I seems to solve all sorts of problems. Also, there is a codec pack available for download as well after you install the new player...

Hi Ernest, did cross my mind. Only on dialup with BT (2 hour time limit) I think the down load file was about 13+M. Go broadband in a month, might have to wait until then.
Thanks anyway.

OK When you re-installed SE, did you delete the Windows directory first/re-format, or did you install on top of the old one?

I'd try two things first:
1) If you re-installed on top of an old installation, have a look at the *.DLLs installed with music match. If you think you have found one, but are not sure DON'T delete it, rename it from *.DLL to *.DLT (this way, if something else stops working, you can just change it back to *.DLL!). Try Media player after each re-name.

2) In Start menu, Control panel, sounds, experiment with moving anything that sounds like it might be a legacy of the musig prog. Media Player can get quite upset with third party drivers/codecs etc.

If all else fails, I agree that updating to a newer Media Player is a good solution: re-installing the old one achieves very little, as the Registry entry is usually the problem, and this tends to be updated only when you "upgrade". Sorry I'm rubbish on 98SE, it's a while since I've had to fix anything on it. If your PC will take it, I'd recommend either 2000 or XP Home Edition. Features allowing you to "roll back" your Windows to before a dodgy software installation do save a lot of time, and both are more stable than 98SE.

Sorry if I sound like a Microsoft salesman, I'm anything but...

Another aside - my Media Player - version 9.00.00.2980 has started playing verything upside down. Rather annoying. I think that it happened when I installed some random codecs, so all my own fault.

Anyone else come across this? If so, is there another solution to the one I adopted (making real player the default for all file types)?

Confused!

Try forcing the re-download of the codec pack from Microsoft. That should sort things hopefully...

Ernest,

Still upside down . Do you have a link to the latest codec pack for media player 9. Would like to sort this, even though it is annoying rather than stopping me doing anything.

Cheers

OK, Got it. Downloaded DivXG400 a bit ago. On the options there is a force vertical flip. Flipped it over and all now appears well. Wonder what it has done to my other players though .

Hi Guy's,
Story so far, Got home tonight and uninstalled the old version of WMP. Managed to download the new version 9.0 and installed that.
So I finds meself a WAV file and double clicks it.
NEW version 9 opens and ...wait for it ...... Error message! $hit!
New message reads,
Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there may be a problem with your sound or video device. Try installing a new device driver.
Just been on to the Media update site and downloaded a possible fix.
Going to reboot and see what happens.
Watch this space.

Big Al.

Edited to say, Nope still the same message!

Which version of DirectX are you running? (should be 8.1 IIRC) What is your sound card?

Blimey Ernest, you get up early or go to bed late!
As I said be gentle with me.

How do I find version of DirectX and sound card?

WMP was working about 2 weeks ago, picture and sound.
I can still play normal CD's in either CD drives, if this helps.

TYIA for your assistants and patience.

Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Information

Select TOOLS -> DirectX Diagnostic Tools
(Your version of DirectX should be listed under DirectX Version)

If your version of DirectX is less than 8.1, download 8.1 and install
-----
Sound Card:
Start>Settings>Control Panel>System (double click) and then "Device Manager" Tab. Click the plus sign next to Sound Video and Game controllers.

Write down your sound card name/type. You can use this information to have a rummage online for new or updated device drivers...

Cheers

ErnestM

PS: It was only about 11:00pm over here. I was up watching the "Children Of Dune" on Scifi channel and checked PH just before nite nite

Yep at work. Good thing, as I am still using 98se here due to software constraints, so helping you is a bit easier. Home system is XP Pro. Much more stable.

Let me know how you get on. The last episode of Children of Dune is on tonight and I'll check back again after it's over...

Have a friend named Bill Bates. Thinks if he touches a keyboard he will accidentally blow up the world. Also thinks that the internet is a CIA/Internal Revenue Service consipiracy

Breaking the problem down a bit, didn't you say this only affected Wav files? Why not download a program to make MP3s out of them? They're only a couple of megs...
