I am currently being chased by the DVLA for a fine of £80 for my old car. This car was sold in April and I have sent proof to them of the bill of sale showing the vehicle as no longer in my possesion.

I sent in details to the DVLA (unfortunately not by registered post) that i had sold the vehicle (09/04/06) after selling the car.

The car as it was sold to a trader did not get re registered until after the tax had expired.

They have the date for the penalty letter as 02/07/06 and report that they did not get any notification until 21/07/06. Though conversations with them report this as the 15/07/06.

I have appealed this as it is not fair I should receive a penalty for a car no longer in my possession and they have replied to me with details stating i should still pay. They have no managed to get my name wrong even though the address and all details where correct from me.

The number of errors on their part are galling, and prove all the more that the system they are using is incorrect and not working correctly but still i have an £80 fine.?!!

Does anyone have any experience of avenues I can take and how to avoid paying out for a car I no longer own?

cheers.

Had a speeding fine a couple of years ago for a banger I'd traded in. Just wrote back to them with the name/address/phone number of the dealer then I never heard any more of it. Don't know how they get away with it.

I'm a bit worried about something similar.

Bought a car from the market using my mates trade account, decided to sell it on rather than sort it (no tax or MOT), signed the V5 and left it with another mate to do the deal as the car was at his lock up.

He didnt realise because it had the traders section on the V5 filled in it was to be completed as normal hence gave the guy the whole document not just the new keepers.

Now, since the deal was done cash, theres no receipt. I have no V5 to send off and because the guy contacted me through ebay, I dont have any contact details/address details appart from his phone number.

Bricking it to be honest. Guy seems straight up, but you just can never tell these days.

Vehicles recorded "in trade" using the yellow trade bit are exempt from SORN if not kept on the road. There's also no system for recording trade-trade moves with the DVLA (though there might be an online one for big dealers)

but if the DVLA still claim i am the registered owner?
where would a vehicle be recorded as "in trade" apologies if there is an obvious answer
