Went out on Burnies Peaks run the other Saturday, hit a huge pothole along one of the dark and twisty lanes, old BG took a hefty thump front and rear nearside. Just had a look for damage, looks like even the bumpstops couldnt manage.

This is what happened at the rear.

You can see where some paint was scraped off to bare metal by the inside of the wheel adjacent to the bumpstop, and the metal on the corner pushed in slightly.

This could have been nasty, the bolt on the clip holding the brake pipes contacted the panel behind the shocker and scraped off the paint you can see to the left of the shocker in the pic above. If the brake pipes had been cut or split open yikes

Ho hum, it's out with the wire brush, some hammerite and the Dynax S50 protection wax.

Better get the front wheel off next and see what's happened there.

Have you checked the wheel itself yet for any buckling?

Wheel appears fine, apart from a bit of very minor scuffing around a quarter of the outer rim on the inside, no worse than kerbing it anyway. Tyre looks undamaged.

Had the front n's off now too, looks OK.

Thanks.

Many years ago I damaged a car in a pothole - wrote to the council and they paid for the repair. More recently my son came off his (very expensive) racing bike and damaged it - again the council paid up without any problem. I think there is a guideline that if the pothole is more than a number of centimetres deep, they will pay, but I'm sorry I don't know what the criteria is. But if it's deep enough to cause damage, it must be within their range. Certainly worth a letter to the council!

Hi BG, sorry to hear that.

I did the same thing Jan 2004 and my insurance co said make a claim and they'd get it back from the council, so I did claim.

Kent County Council wrote back and said "WE DON'T ENTERTAIN ANY CLAIMS MADE AGAINST" and Admiral Ins Co. wouldn't pursue further so I'm now paying a lot more than I should on 3 other insurance policies for 5 years mad

While you're at it Warren, better check your brake discs; the one in the picture is horrific!!

Just surface rust thanks. I washed it last Monday, then put it away until Sunday, and that built up in the interim. The discs were replaced in August 2004 and they are just fine. When I wash the Skoda, they are as rusty as that just the next morning, but it wipes off with just your finger. It does look like a rust bucket in the pic, granted.
