Hi,

I have just got home to find out my credit card has been stopped. The police informed me that card cloning has been taking place in one of the places i have used my card. The card fraud company couldnt tell me who had cloned it, but due to me only using the card in my local shell garage for the past 5 months, i think its fairly onvious the culprit!! So to all you Pistonheads out there just be careful next time you use a shell garage and check your bank statements. This happened to me in Shell Hastings Road Bromley. I also know of someone who this happened to recently, in Shell Seal (Near Sevenoaks)

I thought Shell had stopped using chip & pin because of this? Have they started using it again. Rather worrying that someone can still do this then.

Always worth trying the 'I don't know my pin' trick and sometimes they let you sign, alternatively get an AMEX card before they go chip n pin.

If its not shell its gunna be somwhere els. all it is is a device about the same size as a mars bar. Just swipe your card through and it stores the details. The card is then used in a country without the chip and pin system so it works on the magnetic data alone. If its not done that way its inserted in to a larger machine which copies chip and mag stripe then bashes out the info quite easily.

Its petrol stations as you have to pass through the card and let it out of your sight sof a short period of time. It can also be done at resturants and a cash machines. Just be wary o where you let your card out of sight.

Wouldn't suprise me, we went to fill up at Shell in the works van at around 2am, place stuck to high heaven of weed and loads of people monged out in the back drinking. They give jobs to some dodgy people!

Chip and pin has been re-enstated round our way for about 3 months.

And even if you press the issue with the SHELL PR Department all you'll get is a piss poor copy/paste response.

Dear Mr BliarOut,

Thank you for your recent e-mail of 24th November 2006.

Card fraud is an unfortunate reality in today’s retail environment and impacts on all retailers.

We continue to work closely with the Police, card companies and APACS (the payments trade association) to ensure we have one of the most robust ‘Chip & PIN’ solutions in the industry.

Once again, I am sorry that this experience gave you cause to contact us and I do hope that this will not deter you from visiting Shell branded service stations in the future.

Kind regards.

A couple of years ago I had a letter from the bank asking me to confirm that a transaction that had taken place was genuine. When I checked my records it was a debit card payment to... you've got it... a Shell filling station - this particular one being at Saltaire roundabout near Shipley in West Yorkshire. Nothing was amiss buy they were clearly keeping a close eye on transactions that were taking place there. I later found out that one of the staff had been double-swiping cards and pocketing the extra payment by taking money out of the till under the pretense that the customer had asked for cash-back.

I'm a cash-only type of guy. I'll get out about £50-£100 cash from my bank (actually walk inside the bank and use the cash machien inside - less chance of it being tampered with) and that'll be my fuel/snack/essentials fund for when i'm on journeys and trips.

Sure it's a bit of a hastle, but then again so is having yoru card cloned adn someone fraudently taking money out of your account. OK, you'll get the money back from your bank eventually, but boy it's a bugger!

I'm the same, I tend to use the same one or two ATMs as well, so that way it's easier to tell if the ATM has been tampered with.

With you on this one mate, got into the habit of carrying a small amount of cash so I don't have to use my card, or draw the cash at the filling station to pay for the fuel. My brother lives in London and constantly gets cloned, couldn't be doing with the hassle myself.

Yeah I know, but not near me. It's not just Shell though, I wouldn't trust anyone with my card out of my sight, sad insight to how the country is going
