Helpful snow driving hints...
Discussion
Oh well, I managed to get half way to head office this morning for a meeting before I got the call cancelling it. However, on my route there involving the A5, M1 and A43 I saw some top driving which I feel duty bound to report to the PH collective. It would appear that the laws of physics don't apply this morning!
Foglights...really useful, especially when you have at least 750 yards of perfect visibility. That's right, switch them on...because they come with an added bonus! If you thought you could tailgate the car in front on a nice dry or even wet road, then on a snowy/slushy/icy one you can halve that tailgating distance simply by switching on your rear fogs!!! For added fun, if your car has one foglight on one side only and no central brakelight repeater, clear snow from the foglight side only, and leave everything else covered in deep powder. That way, it will be nigh on impossible to tell if you are braking or not (apart from the great big sideways slide you are doing!!!)
Company vans...hey, who cares if you ram your company van into the back of my car? It's not yours, hell, in fact my car's a company car too so who gives a sh1t? However, I've had whiplash before, and I've been told company whiplash feels the same, and I will sue your company ass if you hit me! Well done to the two numptys in the VW caddy who p1ssed me off so much I pulled into a layby on the A5 to let you pass. May you catch your knob end in your fly next time you urinate.
4x4s...clap clap yes we know you can get a bit more traction, turn a bit easier, and you won't even notice that kerb/hedge/smartcar you've just driven over, but guess what you'll take a damned sight longer to stop 3 tonnes of Discovery than I'll need? Unless the plan is to stick it in reverse at 60 and floor it????? Wake up please people (and no I'm not anti 4x4 at all, I'm a big Landy fan)
Pedestrians/children...running along a frozen pavement on the A5 and then doing skids on your shoes before flaming out and falling into the road in front of me is not intelligent or cool. I nearly did skids too and we are not talking on the road. Trust me, driving is great, so is losing your virginity, drinking beer etc, and as it's looking you are unlikely to experience any of these...
And lastly...motorway signs. So I'm on the M1, it's half light at 0720, it's snowing, there's a Peugeot 106 facing the wrong way in the hard shoulder, people are tailgating, foglighting, driving with lights/windows obscured, and you can hardly see where the lanes are apart from the piles of slush...it's a nightmare. So what do the intelligencia that are the Highways Agency do for us? Well, at 0721 they switch off the streetlights, making the barely visible lanes now near on impossible to see, oh, and they press the overhead sign gantries into service with the incredibly useful "THINK-DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE". Good job, I was just about to bang back a few flaming sambucas to add to the challenge.
Right, I need to dust off the MX5 and go and find a nice big carpark to play in now!!!!
FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i havent got quite that upset on my way in today, but the lorry tailgating an omega at about 60mph on the a12 this morning struck me as really stupid. especially the flashing of the foglights at the omega. its not like he was going to speed up is it? it may have had netherland plates on the lorry so i dont know how more used to snow they are? but bullying another driver like a that just didnt seem a great plan. especially when i caught the fool up at brook street, it all seemed a little futile.
Agreed! Great rant!
But you forgot;
4x4 drivers - just cos you have 4WD does not make it any better for you as most of you numpties have road tyres and all it means is all 4 wheels spin as you try to get grip.
Women - you need to clear ALL windows, mirrors and LIGHTS of snow.
(I am a woman and feel I can say this as it infuriated me this morning seeing them)

He's probably really good in snow but he'll get to a hill and kangaroo to a halt in top gear wondering what the f*ck happened...
i did notice today that every b*stard on the road seemed to have a death wish.
the woman in the astra who forced her way in front of me and then changed lanes 4 times in less than a quarter of a mile, the van driver who nearly took the car in front of me out and then the citroen doing 60 mph on a clear motorway in the left lane whilst another m/way was merging, nice one you f*ckwits!

I find it quite funny when the foglights come out to play. Some people just cant get enough of them. If i had it my way i would smash every single fog light possible. But just because it gets a bit snowy/rainy in the sky, they have to get f**king turned on. Im not even going to go on about a clear summers day!!
Oh well your just have to excuse me as i can only go out and play in the van today as my car is up on axel stands....and its rear wheel drive!!

Not just women I'm afraid. Me too.
I disvoered this morning that lights simply dont work through 4 inches of snow and unless you clear the side windows you simply cant see whats coming at junctions. It will definitely not blow off at speeds of sub 10 mph.

I read yesterday that it is also illegal not to clear ALL the snow off your car roof, I assume that means before you drive off, as being collared for not keeping it clear as you drive along seems a tad too beastly!
I tried to do that, but as I'm short I can't reach the middle of my roof, so my car is now sporting a rather fetching mohican!

Here's one I learned this morning.
4 wheel drive and super-active-yaw-control are pretty much no help at all going down steep hills.

Drop the pressure in your tyres and go down slopes on idle in 1st gear
Much much too lazy Ric (see 2nd post)
gotcha!
