Duff fuel from Tesco

Filled my car up with tescos super for a track day on friday and by the end of the day the car was misfiring, lacking in boost and wouldn't idle. Only put in about a third of a tank though. Got home and cleaned the MAF sensor and the ICV, filled with fresh fuel from BP and reset the ecu and it was ok again.
Doesn't say in the story but the news on the radio says fuel supplied by tesco and morrisons was affected.
Seemed very odd at the time but maybe the new story explains it.

Just read this on the Beeb and its got me thinking. I filled up with Supermarket fuel last Wednesday and on Thursday I got an Oxygen sensor error on the engine management. Had it reset on Friday but it came on again Monday morning. I usually fill up at the Shell on my way home but was doing some shopping and needed motion lotion at the same time. Could be a coincidence.....SMMT now reported several thousand cars affected across south east England not just restricted to Tesco & Morrisons but other retailers as well can be fuel bought as much as a full week ago.
It brings on the engine check light and code error of Oxygen sensor fault some cars also run badly and will not idle, said to be contamination with ethanol at higher levels than current cars will tolerate.

Bingo!! Just had a look back through the receipts and it would appear that the fuel that triggered the issue came from a 'proper' petrol station, already mentionned on the thread.

Update: Latest BBC 24 news reporting receiving texts and emails across the country.
Over the past few days many cars over 3 years old have had oxygen sensors replaced due to faulty running.
Manufacturer's reporting they have run out of stocks to replace the part
Sorry, no link yet fromm BBC news site
BBC radio 5 just reported some motorists have been charged between £500 and £1000 by main dealers over the last week to rectify this fault.
I know of 2 Vauxhalls locally this week that inexplicable have check lights on with oxygen sensor faults. Garages have been changing them when this may not be necessary.
Smmt man ..."this is serious and very nasty for those affected".
May not be so bad if you are topping up a half full tank, but filling an empty tank with this contamination your car may run badly almost immediately , some report roadside failure and stop.

Not sure I understand this. Are you saying that the fuel somehow does something to the oxygen sensor which causes it to generate the error but that the sensor isn't damaged after all? You'd imagine (and I'm being intentionally naive) that the first thing they'd do would be to stick the mot lance up the exhaust and verify the results from the lambda sensor before simply replacing it as doing that on the same tank of fuel will just trip the sensor again. 500-1000! Sweet jebus. The lambda sensor on my subaru is only 80 quid or so and everything on the car is priced as if it were made from unobtainium. All you have to do is unplug one end from the loom and unscrew the sensor from the exhaust. I'm bloody glad I took the time to learn how to fix my own car.
