We had this up before. It's the rule of nines, that is, every answer will be a multiple of nine. Pick any set of numbers, do the subtraction like it says, and your symbol will alway be one of the multiples of nine. You are doing a subtraction from the number you pick to take it to the nearest multiple of nine, I believe. If you look, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, etc always have the same symbols, although the symbols for multiples of nine may change at each attempt.

Is you mental maths quite up to scratch???

It will always be right. Not that clever really is it.
