So my 9 year old son has to design a leaflet arguing for or against fast cars.

Of course he wants to do fast

So - anyone help with some points to bring out?

Fast cars are obviously beautiful and desirable objects. Safer overtaking?

For or against - yes. I'm guessing it's easier to do the against.
so far I've got ...

Beautiful design
They don’t have to be practical so they can be made to look exciting, sleek and attractive.

Safety.
Fast cars are safer because at normal road speeds as they better equipped for cornering and braking. They are also safer at overtaking because they can get past quicker.

Just send him to school with as many TVR photo's as possible and he will come home with a pass mark,

even better drive to school in the TVR, leave it in the playground,

Hot birds always go for blokes in fast cars....

Oh sorry just noticed his age! Try the argument that sports cars push manufactures engineering on performance and safety which filters down to everyday family cars, if VW can make a 250+ mph Veyron stop and corner safely, the next Golf and Polo are going to be really safe places to put your family?

It is a natural instinct in all men to want to push boundaries.

can you imagine where we'd be if...

"Wilbur! Orville! You are not going up in the sky in that thing, it's far too dangerous ... and your tea's ready!"

"I'm sorry Hilary old chap, you can't climb that, far to iffy old boy"

"Scott, good god man are you mad, there's bears and penguins and all sorts, here, have another muffin and put your feet up!"

Blimey, we'd all be driving Priuses!

Because until we are told us otherwise we live in a free democratic society and if driving a fast car gives someone pleasure then that should be justification enough.

Its necessary to have fast cars. Without fast cars, you can technically never have slow cars on the road as there would be nothing to compare them to in order to class them as slow.

They can't have their cake AND eat it.

There is very little in our lives that is truly necessary. Art? Music? A house that is more than a square box? - all not necessary. we dont actually need italian food, chinese food, indian food. We don't need 100 types of cheese, 200 types of beer, umpteen thousand types of wine. we don't need hairdressers, beauty products or designer clothes. We don't need TV, film or the right to walk the countryside. We don't need fast, beautiful cars either. Our survival does not depend on these things. Our lives would be just as long if we had none of these things. But who would want to live that long without them?

Absolutely! Perhaps the easiest way to show why we need them is to imagine life without them - not just TVRs (or any sports cars) but any kind of object that inspires and / or challenges and / or gives pleasure. Odd isn't it. I bet there won't be many 9 year old boys who have even stopped to think WHY they like this sort of thing but, despite the best efforts of the grey, utilitarian killjoys, generations of young lads have instinctively felt inspired / awed / impressed etc by such things. (well, boys with red blood in their veins anyway!) They're not encumbered by the idea that before you're allowed to "like" anything, you have to justify it's existence and get it past the scrutiny of the pleasure Stazi! They just feel what they feel. I'll say this though. Having given a few school talks on engineering, I can honestly say that there was a far more positive reaction when I turned up in a TVR than anything else! How many kids would be inspired to take up engineering if I'd turned up in a solar-powered tricycle made from recycled lentils?

What IS a fast car? a car is only as fast as the operator wants it to be.

shame.

because you can argue the law of averages as well.

Simply, if people in the 60's and 70's werent building faster sports cars, then disc brakes wouldn't have become commonplace on cars, the same for crumple zones etc.

Fast cars by their very nature need to be able to push the boundaries of todays limitations on cars, and therefore through the advancement in technology, improve the safety and design of modern everyday cars.

If all fast cars were banned tomorrow, the developments would slow to a trickle.

As with all engineering, you need people constantly pushing the boundaries today to make tomorrow better for the masses.

Maybe he could say that without mans constant obsession with wanting to go faster we would still be going abroad on sailing ships and using horse and cart to get from one end of the country to the other. Witout the pioneers of speed society would be backward in almost every sense!
