Jaguar E Type convertible

So the next car was an E Type convertible.

What a car - It is such a pretty car - As soon as you see it, you KNOW it’s special.

Start up the 5.3L V12 and the noise is awe inspiring. Being 40 years old the gearbox is not the best and needs a bit of patience between the gears. But once you are in a gear, this thing really pulls!!! 300 bhp in a classic car and you really notice it!!!

I am trying my best to use the points on weekdays. So the plan is to pick up a car on a weekday (Tuesday) and then drive home, drive to work and back the next day (Wednesday) and then drive the car back to the club the morning after (Thursday).

So I picked up the E Type on Tuesday and have a great drive home in the rain! I got back to work fine on Wednesday, but on the drive home the exhaust fell off!!!! In the middle of Fleet Street!!! Just by the police check area!! Luckily the AA man only took 15 minutes to get there

Quick fix and I’m off!!!

That was too low, so I pulled out the zip ties – They can fix anything!!!!

The zip ties did their job but the middle part of the exhaust started to drop and I wasn’t crawling under the middle of the car to fix it! It marred the second half of the E type hire, but I’ve been promised by the club some form of reimbursement.

Great car! Just a shame about the exhaust!

Oh and the fuel economy wasn’t great - £100 got me 200 miles!!! smile

Rest of the pics Here

Oh - yeah! - Here's the bit I forgot to paste from my Word doc -

"You sit nice and low to the ground, I'm about 5'10 and my eye level was the height of the top of the windscreen - This was a tad annoying especially when it rained. The engine red lines at about 6500rpm. The thing is that 2500rpm sounds like you are close to the limit, then you start to realise you can really boot it! As it reaches 4, then 5 thousand the engine is screaming!!! The big V12 pulls beautifully smoothly all the way through the range.

Changing gear was fun, I'm not sure if this was all E types or just this one, but the best way I found was to rest the gear stick toward the gear you want and wait until it slips in. Ooo err misus! The car has power steering and I mean power steering and not power assisted steering! So there is very little feedback from the wheel. I have been told this is due to the heavy V12 at the front! – Well it is massive! This made it interesting to drive (this is maybe why a member bent the club’s red E type coupe last week!) Great car and fun to drive - I now have big respect for the guys who race these!"

You didn't really expect it to be reliable, did you? I've actually been thinking of having bumper stickers made for the fine Coventry products in my garage:

All parts falling off this car are of the highest quality British manufacture

Sounds great. I want to join as soon as possible really but there site mentions nothign about wha age you have to be and my email wasnt replied to smile. Ah well, my uncles mate is a member and ive poked around the clubs Ferrari 328, BMW 730d, The Porshce 911 cabrio they used to have and an Exige. Greta idea to join really.

ETA: Which region are the 308 and E-type from, i cant see any mention on the london page?? The london e type is cream and the 308 is a GTB.

Well - Those zip ties held out for the 1.5 hours back into the city from 30 miles west of london, the bit that broke was the centre of the manifold, the section under where the gear stick is.

The part at A stayed on (I though it would melt!)and one of the 4 ties at B snapped, but it all held in place - well at the back box anyway! It was better than the chicken wire that had been used before!

I would advise the club to anybody - For me it is working well - I am preparing an honest post on the club that may help people! Watch this space....... The overall recommendation is good, but it may depend on your situation.....

The website is not the most updated or the best. They don't really do themselves justice, I think they actually have 2/3 E types and 2 308s! I'm a member of the London club. I would recommend going and taking to them about the club, there are many benefits that you won't see until you talk to them

Age - I'm not sure - I'll ask tomorrow!! (I'm picking up the 1983 Rolls!)
