Garage did a bad........
Discussion
Right....
Mrs G's car just cam back from the garage - had a wheel bearing replaced [front nearside].
Picked it up today after the garage had closed but Mrs G reported a funny noise again. A bit like the noise the bearing was making....but different.
She had driven 10 miles at 60mph.
I checked the car...the wheel nuts were LESS than finger tight on the front wheel.
One came off in my hand.
The wheel had several inches of play in it until I refitted it.
I intend to report this to the garage tomorrow morning, where do I stand ?
What would you do ?

Be reasonable in tone, but straight forward and assertive with the garage
If they try and apologise and game over, hammer it into them that this could've potentially been catastrophic for one or more people and that oversights like this should be unheard of by a "so-called" professional outfit
Then take a shit on the dahsboard of his car, take a piss on his sarnies and puke in his socks

Don't use them again. Sounds defeatist but anything else is a waste of time in my experience. They may give someone a bollocking or even fire someone but ultimately it happens because their first priority is to make money. I know this sounds bitter but I'm sick of garages giving shit service and gave up using them years ago.
I had a major service done on my Honda at a main dealer.
The next day I noticed a large oil leak. Tried to trace it - and found a VERY loose sump plug - which was more than dripping.
I tightened it - and phoned them.
They were extremely apologetic, and took the car back to re-service it by the service manager to ensure that everything was done correctly. And in addition they gave me a part refund on the service, some new car mats (which I needed anyway) and a full tank of petrol.
I was genuinely impressed by their attitude and response.
But of course it could easily have swung the other way - with complete denial, etc, etc ....

Its becuase they want you to come back,. business must not be brilliant right now, so loosing customers is a no-no. The next day I noticed a large oil leak. Tried to trace it - and found a VERY loose sump plug - which was more than dripping.

Hi
Unfortunately these things happen in garages....it was not done deliberately...they should apologise....but you have no legal rights to anything I am afraid...unless the wheel or arch was damaged....
When I owned a garage...one of my mechanics was cleaning a customers engine...and picked up the wrong spray bottle...and sprayed a running engine with paraffin
The engine promptly caught fire...and was totalled....
I had the job of ringing the customer to say his brakes were done but his engine and the bonnet paintwork were history
We replaced the engine with a new one (even though it was a donkeys years old Montego with over 100,000 miles on it, we had the front end resprayed as well....
The customer was happy and continued to be a customer..
But as I said accidents do happen...so it will depend on the garages attitude to what you get out of it...but legally you have not got a leg to stand on.....what MIGHT have happened is immaterial to a court of law...
All the best Brett

Whilst it may be negligence no compensable damage was sustained.
You need to prove a duty of care, that there has been a breach of that duty (so far, so good) and that damages have occurred as a result of that breach. No damage, no claim - unless you wish to test a court with emotional distress??!

My local mercedes garage carried out a routine service on my car and when i collected it there was a big dent in the tailgate.
When i reported this to the service manager he accused me of lying and claimed the dent was always there, after much fuss they "eventually" sent out a dent repairer to remove it.
Everytone makes mistakes , its how you react to solving them that is true customer service

Many years ago I passed a (think a Maxi) car parked up with the driver searching in the bushes. He was looking for the wheel, it had come off, a few miles after picking the car up from a garage
Many years ago mate was travelling along in his Imp when a wheel came hurtling up the road passing him, thought "I have a wheel like that", BUMP rear of car hits ground. His fault though.
Many years ago a mate was travelling past the resevoirs on the Military Road in Northumberland, when bang the wheel studs sheared and the wheel went flying off. If they ever drain the resevoir, there's a Triumph Stag wheel in there....
And finally whilst these were incidents we can now laugh about, a friend many years ago replaced the half shaft in his Cortina. Forgot the retaining plate, realised and in his youthful ignorance cut it and bolted everything up. The plate halfs bent, the shaft came out on a fast corner, the car went off the road. He suffered serious permenant brain damage.
Now that was his fault but some garages employ young kids to do menial tasks (and sometimes greater tasks) without proper training.....
