Thinking of replacing the old Sony CD changer in my new motor (see PH, passim) with something a bit more up to date and MP3-compatible. Can I find how to get the head unit outeasily? No.

There's a piece of plastic trim surrounding the face of the unit but I'm reluctant to apply brute force to it in case I break something -- though I'm hoping that behind it is a pair of slots or somesuch.

What's the best way to attack it?

Thanks.

Is the bit of plastic part of the stereo ?

Usually this just unclips (brute force my be necessary) tools required for removing the stereo should have come with it, but any ICE specialist will do it for you

Park it in a dodgy area and don't lock the doors.

Go and buy a loaf of bread, or some fags or something.

Voila......

Seriously, they usually slide out pretty easily. There may me a couple of clips holding it in place.

Theres usually a clip on bezel (surround) that covers the aperture for the removal clips to fit into manek.
If memory serves, the sony units use a flat steel plate about 10mm in width to go into that aperture(one either side) and after inserting it and then depressing or lifting it while pulling it out at the side you have the tool in.
It should make an audible clicking if its released and that side of the unit will come free, then repeat the operation on the other side.
Hope this helps. Ps, dont break the plastics..lol
edited to add, if its a face -off unit, the removal aperture will be behind that, so thered be no need to remove the surround.

if you dont have the special tool to remove the head unit from its slot case Halfords do a 'universal' tool for removing such things..

Wouldn't worry toooo much about the plastic surround. You can buy these for a few quid from Halfords.

Just lever the surround out slowly with couple of flathead screw-drivers.

To get the headunit out, look at the sides of the headunit. There should be two or four clips that need to be eased out. Just play around with a flathead screw-driver and it should start to free up. Keep levering from both sides and it should pop out.

It may be worth using the old cage with the new headunit if it fits. No point using a brand new one if the old one is snuggly fitted in.

if its the sony unit i know and love then it can be removed very easily. the plastic surround will come off with a flat bladed screwdriver - just pop the lugs out of the frame and that should leave you with a few holes down the side of teh unit. you can poke anything down there - but a phillips screwdriver the same size as the hole works best. you only need one - lever away from the unit as you pull that side forwards and when its come a bit repeat on the other side. should then slide out no probs. disconnection is then easy and it can be removed from the car and lowered into the nearest bin. i didnt have to constantly remove my head unit because it was reliable

To get it out properly from the cage there are two slots along the top if you don't have the tool you can sometimes stick a piece of metal down there and free it from the case. The plastic surround may be attached to the H/U depending on the model so you may have to unscrew it. Then you can remove the whole thing including the cage by bending the bits of metal back. The sony headunit in my polo was hard to get out as it was jammed in the wrong cage

Thanks all -- sounds like brute force may be necessary...
