Time For A Commercial Break

New Audi ad runs rings around rivals

Ring ding ding
Ring ding ding
The folks from Ingolstadt are certainly walking around with a swagger in their step these days. With the success of the RS4 and R8 in particular, who can blame them?

Feeling a bit Friday-ish and trawling the archives – YouTube, I believe it’s called – we came across this new Audi ad which shows just how much those espousers of Vorsprung durch Technik rate their own products.

Certainly a shot across the bows of all four of its closest rivals, the commercial features the name Ciavena, which is a dealership chain in Brazil. We reckon this ad is fair game, and hopefully will stimulate some interesting competition between these top four executive brands.

A return for the Volvo crash test dummy anyone?

Sorry but BMW have the best approach to advertisement both on BMW & MINI. The other manufactuers are clearly trying to copy, as usual.

When Audi start making their cars rear-wheel-drive I'll start to believe thay're on the same rung of the ladder as BMW and Merc. Until then they're overpriced Volkswagens.

Putting BMW & Merc together seems a bit laughable!

Well, BMW has certainly been lacking in 'nice' design since they have been Bangled

Volvo are anything but sporty (yes they make some fast ones, but they are still not sporty)

Merc are more known for their comfort than anything else - having a much larger proportion of their sales in the larger cars than either BM or Audi - although their new C class is supposed to be better in the handling stakes

and I don't think anyone can deny Alfa is design over function...

so to me it's a fair game...

The 2 year old RS4 has outdone the new M3 in all the head to head tests I have read (just), none of them have an answer for the R8, the new A5 looks stunning in the flesh IMO and the S8 is one of the best luxo barges around.

I have owned all of these marques in the past, and I think the accuracy of the 4 brands market perception is very good and a nice way to promote your own brand.

Well at least this time they didn't drag out footage of Group B Quattros even though Audi haven't been near a rally in 20 odd years.

Why bother with RWD when you have Quattro?

Someone else trotting out the 'overpriced VWs' argument, I see. You could at least try to be original. Try saying this one instead: "The R8 is a brilliant bargain Lamborghini that Mercedes and BMW simply don't have a competitor for". Sounds good, doesn't it? hehe

I guess the doubtors should drive one first or at least have an ownership experience.

Its a shame there isn't a British company achieving this type of success, they make decent cars people want to drive and own and rightfully deserve success. Lets hope they don't do a BMW arrogance routine and spoil it all. A fine line between confident and brash.

I agree with the rear wheel drive comments, but on typical road car fodder A4 3 series etc, I have owned most of them & IMO the Audi wins hands down front wheel drive or not in more ways than one. As for the specialist stuff they fit 4 wheel drive. Seems a logical approach to me.

I agree, For me, Audi has the whole market covered, From the A3 to the Q7,they have at least matched the best BMW & Mercedes can do and they have done something with the R8 that BMW have tried but failed miserably over the years - Z8 anyone?

Yes, I love the RS4 and I think the A8 and A2 were two of the most intelligent pieces of design launched in recent years, but the stuff in between is over-hyped.

I had high hopes for my A4, but within 5 miles I realised the 3 year lease was going to be a long, painful ride.
Lifeless steering, dampers that hadn't even seen a B-road during testing and brakes that faded dreadfully on my regular runs over the Peak district.

On its several visits back to the Audi garage to have myriad electrical and plastic trim faults rectified I had the chance to experience A4 and A6 hire cars. That only proved my A4 wasn't unique.......

I was the A4 driver that longed for a Mondeo!

You didn't test drive one then? How bizarre!

No, they haven't.

Audi don't have an answer to this car, at all.

The nearest thing to this (or its less-pretty E60 descendent) is the RS6.

The nearest thing to this that Audi have is the TT, which although it's nicer looking than it was, still has more than a whiff of steel-rimmed spectacles, polo neck jumpers and black berets about it.

Audi make some worthy cars, but BMW have their bases covered. With bells on.

Of course, all the above is just my opinion. I've driven the odd A4, A6 and A3 and quite frankly, I found them all somewhat anodyne. In fact, they were so tediously competent that I was bored in all of them. And the interiors are a bit cack - in design (A6/A4) and fit/finish (A3).

The () brackets in your username knack up the quoting, BTW

I didn't. The BMW and Mercedes dealers were able to provide a demonstrator same day, but the Audi dealers were not interested. The third dealer i went to provided an A3 so I could experience the same engine. I had read in Evo/Car that the facelifted A4 was better than the previous one, and simply assumed it would be a better sorted car than the Vectra SRi I was disposing of. (Well, you would wouldn't you!). Erm, it wasn't.

However, the BMW 5 I have now has made my smile muscles work again after they had been paralysed by men from Ingolstadt in white coats.

However, back on thread, Audi have the best marketing of any car brand (possibly excluding Mini), which is why none of the above really matters to those who choose them

Why is quattro such a problem for you? Sure audi have some fwd models but quattro is at the heart of the brand, you suggest the drop it for RWD? In this country?

Audi certainly are making some very good adverts now, still think that BMW make better ones. Audi are closing in though! There are some cars Audi can't answer too, as said above the Z4M or the M3csl. and in 2 reviews between new M3 and RS4 the M3 came out trumps, but only just. As all rounders go I think Audi are certainly up there, certainly with styling (the A4/RS4 is lovely, as is S5, R8, S8/A8 etc, which BMW don't have quite so much, though new 6 is nice and 3 series coupe. Merc build quality not all there (trust me, i own one). well done Audi

Don't want to appear a bogan but the best car commercial I've seen recently is this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kd2mMa0KqE. You can have smugness, but humour is always better.
