Just started a full strip and re-build of the 2CV, after much umming and arring i thought balls. Why not?!

So, what should i replace the tary-bitumen coverd insulation with?! Am i right in assumeing that it has no fire retarding properties and is simpley sound proofing? If so, can anyone suggest a suitable modern replacement? It lines the bulkhead and underbonnet so needs to be as light as poss and heat resistant.

Last but not least, is there a product made for cars similar to household expandable foam that is suitable for useing behind door cards, in box sections that is safe to use on paintwork? I nont want my lovely new re-spray getting f**ked up!

Thankyou!

Sound proofing? In a 2CV!!!

Not sure if it's fire retardent... After mine caught fire, (kids set fire to the front seats in the rain - burns hole in roof - rain puts fire out!) all I did was change the seat covers, clean the windscreen and put an old roof on it.

A few of the plastic bits were a bit melted, and some of the trim was a bit droopy but it still worked.

I wouldn't bother - you'll weigh it down too much.
My father is in the process of rebuilding a 1958 AZL - no sound proofing whatsoever.

Thanks for the replys guys, think ill go for a bit of dynamat. Cant bare to have none at all, iv already got a short exhaust so its loud!

megamaniac, have you got any advice on getting a bit more poke out of the engine? Ill have 3 or 4 weeks to swap all my parts over to a new chassis whilst the body is resprayed, should have a bit of time to tinker with the engine then. However, im not that familiar with the twin 'yet' and funds arnt realy on my side! Ta.

LS1? might need a little fabrication work, and could stretch the ol' budget. Also, you may die.

Good idea! however its a bit beyond me at the moment. Saveing up for a BMW boxer engine, which should make it rapid compared to the old twin! thats gonna be a year or so cos reliabilty is top of the list, so would like something a bit cheaper!

Instead of dynamat go to www.caraudiodirect.com and look at the second skin range - i use this in my mundaeno and the difference between a deadened and an un-deadened door is fantastic (i will get a vid later if anyone is interested)

Also check out the talkaudio.co.uk forum as they have a damn good section on sound-deadening that may be interesting

Take 0.5mm off the top of each barrel ,have the flywheel skimmed down to the ring gear on both sides ,set the valve clearances to 0.25mm inlet and exhaust and drill the primary fuel jet out from 1mm to 1.2mm .Set the ignition timing to 30 degrees at 4000rpm et voila .
