20-07-2003

Today's British Grand Prix was marred by a fatal accident in the Historic Sports Car race that followed the Grand Prix.
David Heynes, 56, from Faringdon, Oxfordshire crashed his Lotus 15 at Becketts on lap nine of the 12 lap Historic Sports Car race.

He received intensive medical treatment at the scene of the accident and in the circuit's Grand Prix Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Driver killed at Silverstone

A 56-year-old man was killed while competing in a historic sports car race at Silverstone as a day of drama at the British Grand Prix ended in tragedy.

David Gordon Heynes, of Buckland, Oxfordshire, was killed when his Lotus 15 car crashed into a tyre wall at Becketts Corner in the final race of the day.

Heynes was given intensive medical treatment at the scene and in the Northamptonshire circuit's medical centre where he was pronounced dead.

"The MSA (Motor Sports Association) regrets to report the death of David Gordon Heynes, aged 56, while competing in the Historic Sportscar Challenge race," the MSA, the sport's governing body in Britain said in a statement.

"Heynes, of Buckland, Faringdon, Oxon, crashed his Lotus 15 (car number 28) into the tyre wall at the Becketts Corner.

"He received intensive medical treatment at the scene and in the circuit's Grand Prix Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead.

"His next of kin have been informed. The MSA and Silverstone offer their deepest condolences to David's wife and family."

I wonder why the F1 didnt mention this at all?? If only out of respect.

They are usually quite good about that sort of thing.

It's on the news website i.e. Sky News but not on ITV F1 which is a popr show given the guy died during an F1 support race. Thoughts with his family
