£25 Congestion Charge Gets Green Light

Mayor creates gas guzzler charge for Congestion Zone

Ken Livingstone, the London Mayor, has today given the green light to a £25 charge for high powered sports cars and so-called ‘Chelsea tractors’ to drive in Central London.

The controversial scheme will mean that from October 27 cars with the highest greenhouse gas emissions will pay the daily charge within the Congestion Zone.

Meanwhile cars with the lowest CO2 emissions (Bands A and B) will receive a 100 per cent discount, which the Mayor hopes will make people go green.

These vehicles emit less than 120g of C02 per kilometre.

The scheme is a key part of the Mayor's Climate Change Action Plan, which aims to reduce London's C02 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.

Gas guzzlers that will be charged £25 to drive in the zone are Band G, and emit over 225g of C02 per kilometre.

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said: ‘Nobody needs to damage the environment by driving a gas guzzling Chelsea Tractor in central London.

‘The CO2 emissions from the most high powered 4x4s and sports cars can be up to four times as great of those of the least polluting cars.

‘The CO2 charge will encourage people to switch to cleaner vehicles or public transport and ensure that those who choose to carry on driving the most polluting vehicles help pay for the environmental damage they cause.’

I can probably guess the answer, but what about cars pre 2001 which do not have an emmissions rating?
£25 for them too?

Why would you want to drive a SUV or Ferrari (etc) in that area anyway, if you can afford one then you can buy a polo bluemotion and use the expensive car for the purpose its multi million pound development intended!

he does seem to be a rule to himself these days. Does anyone have any control over him. I quite liked him when he first came back on the scene but now he's just back to how he was in the GLC Days... cost everyone a fortune!!!!

I still fail to see how a congestion charge should have anything to do with CO2.

Getting the Freelander 2 delivered at the end of this week...and I cannot wait! Kinda wish I had gone for the i6 now tho - really get on those environmentalist's nerves. biggrin

I feel sorry for you London folks, I really do. Whilst I enjoy the same ass-raping every motorist does, at least I know I live out in the middle of nowhere in Northumberland and (with a bit of luck) any CC zone anywhere, is unlikely to reach me.

I do wonder if Red Ken has to answer to anyone, tho. Seems he can just wake up one morning and say, "Hy, let's charge people for wearing shoes in the city!" and it happens. No questions asked.

Help me out here....I thought we already had a CC in Kens Utopia? and I thought the recent rumour was he was going to tax 'green' cars too because the place had become full of the things?

Has this anything to do with LEZ?

the problem in london is where to keep your car, its bad enough having one to park let alone two! so for all you lot that think that us london lot are just being silly driving around in our cars the problem is that they also make it so hard for you to have more than one car. so in actual fact we have to just have a polo and no bmw/porsche/ferrari

ken Just F U C K off

being someone who owns a Band G car living in the zone, do you think i would have been an ideal person to have been consulted on during this 'public consultation'. I heard the rumour last year even surfed CClondons web page, there was no public consultation, its fcuking communism! he probably asked three of his leaf eating mates what they thought whilst s ucking each other off in a turkish bath.

I hope he dies horribly in by getting crushed between a G-wizz and a prius, surviving only to be killed by a massive freak discharge from the g-wizz's battery and then the trafalgar square pigeons come and eat his f ucking eyeballs out before his corpse is trapped under a bendy bus and dragged round the streets of london - thats what londers really want you commy !

So, if transport (excluding planes) creates 22% of the polution in London, what is Ken Dodd* doing about the other 38% that he needs to meet his target - plus of that 22% less than half will be targeted.

Why does he even pretend it's for environmental and congestion reasons, when everyone (or everyone with a brain) knows it's ballix.

Somebody put him out of our misery - method is up to you - I'll even donate a couple of quid for his 'accident'.

* sorry, but I thought there was only comedian with Ken as a first name.

I do think he's trying to send motoring back to the old days - only for the rich. If you've got an Aston, you can afford to pay £25 for a trip to London.
I still think he should be eaten.

what about the massive congestion he himself has introduced by altering the traffic systems etc? Even a small car going nowhere so taking longer for the same trip than is worse than a bigger car actually getting around quicker.

Also I do believe that these Prius' etc aren't made by pixies, but rather big smoke belching factories and container ships / trains / trucks. But no.. they arrive from la la land on the drive???? Why can't people keep a car for longer than they keep a f@cking washing machine or tv so that there are less on the road, and we wouldn't have this problem. Why have a new car every 3 years anyway? It takes loads of CO2 to build them! Work it out! A 'gas guzzler' kept ofr a long time and used only when the tube is not sufficient is better than a hippy going round in a new euro 1L crap box every 2 years striving for that extra 2 mpg! duh!

How about a 350Z, RX-8 or S2000?

What have Co2 emissions got to do with Congestion charging anyway, if they were doing it on the size of vehicles I might understand their warped reasoning. Although I wouldn't agree with it.

Scumbag strikes again.
