Why do UPS use unique vans? Are they a normal van with a hideous nose applied or are they made especially for UPS?

Not the world's most pressing topic, but I'm curious

I always quite liked them for reasons I have never worked out...

Look like they might be big enough to make a good (small) racecar transporter though?

I don't care what vans they use - I just wish they'd teach their drivers to drive. AND USE THE INSIDE LANE ON THE MOTORWAY EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FFS!

I'd like to know why UPS drivers never bear any resemblance whatsoever to the hunky bloke they use in their adverts?

Ours looks like a cross between George Formby and Gaz from Supergrass... lovely chap though, he never moans that I usually only half fill the waybill in.

often pondered on this myself... surely its an expense that could be illiminated by using a standard merc sprinter or MovanoD (as i call 'em) rather than having some 'gone-to-the-wall' coachbuilder rebody them for no reason

and would it hurt to stop painting 'em shit-slick brown as well???

I preferred their Douglas DC-8 Freighters. I think they are all withdrawn now, unfortunately.

Did you know that UPS will not employ men with beards, not that I'd want to work for them.

thats what american companies do, McD even have US manufactured mops. Shame our companies don't do the same that way UK manufacturing would still be an industry.

I have, flickering around my empty head, the idea that the vans are specially built to make accident damage easy to repair, ie the panels are rivetted on.

Drill 'em out, rivett a new one on.......

Those UPS vans here in the UK are actually, underneath that bizarre body built to a global theme, nothing more than the humdrum Merc 812 Vario.

UPS buy them as ChassisCowls, then build the body around it. If you look at the wheels, then the 3-pointed star is easily viewed, and the other tell-tale is that distinct engine note.

The Vario has never lived up to it's potential, and in the bus market it has actually been credited for MB's collapse of market share, such is it's unpopularity. It's positively hated amongst many drivers.

he'd come in quite handy for deliveries in the Tora Bora cave region though wouldn't he? I imagine the absence of door numbers and road names confounds even the most experienced UPS employee up there.

maybe the sprayer is a rehabilitated junkie and he wants the vans to be the same colour as his old cf bedford ambulance.
