First Car And Thoughts
Discussion
There are lots and lots of threads on this subject already.
Personally I would go with whatever gives you the cheapest insurance (as this is likely to be your major cost)
How much do you have to spend in total (car+insurance) and how many miles will you be doing?
My advise is to get onto autotrader and search for local cars around your price bracket. Then get onto an insurance comparison site and see which ones give the best value on insurance. Dont just look at typical "first time" drivers cars. Sometiems low powered 4 door family cars might be cheaper than smaller metal.

I found that for myself it cost half the amount to insure a focus saloon compared to the exact same model if it was a hatchback. Also, it helps if you go for a non sporty model as these aren't seen as "young person" cars by insurers and should thus save you more on the insurance cost.Well my first car was/is a Mk3 Golf 1.8 GL, in which the insurance isn't bad at all, for me at least as a named driver, although it technically isn't my car. Anyway the insurance as a named driver is £410, with my dad as main driver 9+ years no claims, and my brother added as well. BTW I'm still 17 and recently passed my test (i.e. Wednesday). Although I believe getting the insurance at that price was a complete fluke tbh.
P.S. IMO you probably are better off going for a 1.0 Micra or Ka or similar.
Cheers, Paul.

It's cheap because it's your dad's car. I bet you'd find it much more expensive if it were yours.P.S. IMO you probably are better off going for a 1.0 Micra or Ka or similar.

said it before and i'll say it again, think outside the box.
if you can live with something a bit unusual then you can get quite a car, my first car was a 24 year old vauxhall cavalier, don't laugh, it had a 2.0 engine and was rwd (think 4dr opel manta if you're confused), cost £750 a year to insure fully comprehensive.
at a time when a mate was paying £1600 a year on a 1.1 fiesta i think i got the better deal, good fun to drive, cheap to insure, pretty quick considering and a hoot on wet roundabouts...

I was WANDERING in exactly what do you mean, new car with free insurance etc, or used and your budget.
Sorry im not a perfect speller, paul..You must think your ultimately clever replying to me and correcting my mistakes, with no other intention but to make yourself look smart and in realistic point of views STUPID.
Everyone else thank you for your replys and I will take note.
I think ive made my choice.
Thanks

Ford Ka?
I was thinking Corsa..
Any advantages and disadvantages of both cars?
You can only post one Ad/Dis for one car if you want
My housemate at uni had a Corsa 1.4 sport (roughly 1997ish i think). It was an utterly terrible car, rolled like god knows what with atrocious handling. Terminal understeer teaches you nothing about car control, and to add insult to injury they look utterly s

t (all generations). The KA however has an ability to entertain far beyond the sum of it's parts. The engine may be crude but is very reliable and utterly cheap to maintain, like all the running costs - insurance/tax/fuel. It will oversteer or drift if you practice and the steering provides lovely weighted feedback way better than any other car i've driven. It really is a joy.
The only disadvantage about the KA is it looks like a chocolate tea-pot. However, i found girls liked it and all who mocked later admitted it was an hilarious little car. In the end myself and all my mates at uni were very fond of the little beast that got us all to numerous national karting events, and I miss it dearly.
A Corsa? Really?

Cheers,
Rob.
Peugeot 306 1.9 D-Turbo, similar insurance to the Corsas, Fiestas, Clios etc. But 92 BHP compared to the average 60-80 of 1.0-.1.4 petrol engines, 45 MPG, bigger, better specced and nicer to drive, also a lot better looking IMO.
Downsides, noisy engines, they suffer a few electrical problems, but easily rectified if you know how. They can be prone to HG failure, but a well serviced model should see you ok!
I had one as my first car, owned it for two years and loved it. I think it is the best, cheapest car to insure as a young driver.
