Headlights in the middle of the day

OK, WTF is this all about then.

Every morning & evening when I'm having the pleasure of my journey to and from work I see these muppets driving along blissfully unaware that they've got their headlights on. I mean at 8am and 6pm in the middle of summer it's not exactly f:censored;g dark is it!

For once it's not Volvos, it's the muppets in their A4 estates and Pissats. So why do they do it? These numpty wagons all have buzzers telling you you have left he lights on so they must have deliberately got into the car and then in bright sunshine turned the lights on. There's no heat haze for your car to get lost in so what's the excuse?

Is it just me or is the intelligence of the general population falling below that of a small rodent? I'd get more intelligent conversation out of my parents old dog - and he's been dead 10 years

Must agree, you can just about forgive the volvo drivers, nothing they can do about it.

What really pulls my chain are the knobs that drive around with fog sorry,'driving' lights on.

What complete tw@ts, how on earth does a fog light make the car look 'cool'.

Its a defensive driving tactic to drive with dip beam on at all times. However, lately i have noticed people driving with main beam on in the day which has the same effect as night - i.e. dazzles you!!!!

My headlights are so bright i have to run on sidelights until proper dark anyway as i am concious of the effects of these lights in daytime/dusk. never had a problem after dark though - ooer missus!

Bikers do it all the time - and I have no objections. I often do it in my Caterham as the car is so small it is not always noticed by inattentive drivers.

I sometimes do it on m/ways since I'm often travelling faster than traffic I'm passing. I'd rather they noticed me...

Bikers need lights on as they're much harder to see. But there is a campaign against DRLs (daytime running lights) I believe.

It's the law in Sweden. One of the reasons why Mazda dropped the pop-up headlamps on the "new" MX-5 was that the original versions had to drive around in Sweden with their pop-ups permanently up.

In Sweden it's COMPULSORY to have your headlamps on AT ALL TIMES.

Same here in Finland, and to be honest I can't see why it would bother anybody so much. Full beam I could understand but dipped lights in daytime? It's hardly dazzling...

I used to think it was pointless in the summer but I've noticed it actually does help with visibility, particularly on long, straight sunny roads when you're contemplating an ambitious overtaking move

My main gripe is that although most cars here are sold with always-on lights, mine have to be turned on manually despite other Honda vehicles being automatic. And when I forget, people flash me...

Hmmm... let's think about this. Some folk rant about daytime headlights. Some folk gibber about others not indicating. Then there are those who upset others by overtaking, undertaking, speeding, going too slowly, parking stupidly, driving blinged-up sh!theaps; Skoda, Lada, Mercedes and BMW drivers; baseball caps; boom-boxes; mobile phones; sitting in the middle lane, the outside lane, or all three lanes at once. Artics, taxis, white van man... all get their share of criticism.

DOES ANY FER ACTUALLY DRIVE PROPERLY IN THIS COUNTRY???

I'm afraid I'm sometimes guilty of this one. If ever I'm in an underground/multi-storey car park I have my headlights on. When leaving I sometimes forget to turn them off for a few minutes.

I put my headlights on in Bristol cos every fcuker is blind also shove them on if im making rapidish progress in the car , it makes you a little bit more visible when pressing on

I sometimes drive with my headlights on - it alerts people in front of you, same lane, of your presence earlier, and also makes you more visible when overtaking.

Often it's difficult to spot a silver or blue car in the distance overtaking - particulary when they choose not to use their indicators.

I can't see how lights would be blinding unless high up eg a lorry - there's so much ambient light anyway.

So, I drive with lights on to be more visible to other road users, as I am often travelling faster and overtaking - if that makes me a muppet, then so be it.

I drive with dipps on Motorways & what not and have been known to ride with rear fogs at dusk (some of the roads have the sun coming straight down and you can't see in front of you, switch them off quickly tho).

Volvo's sold in the UK no longer have their dips on permentally I believe, something to do with it's electronically controlled rather than manual switches hence easier to have a different firmware per country.

You really should have your dipped beam when driving with low lying sun behind you as otherwise your car can become almost invisible. to the traffic coming towards you.

I don't think it is advisable to drive all the time with dipped beam but there are situations where they are invaluable.

one thing though, at dusk use sidelights not dipped beam because the difference in light conditions really can blind - even if it doesn't in daylight or night time.

I totally agree with Fog lights as these can be dazzling and dangerous to other drivers. Main lights on the other hand I think should be allowed on and let off your judgemental ways. I drive with lights so that bikes, other cars and pedestrians can see me. I think there is nothing wrong with driving with dipped lights on - I DO!!

I do it too. On back roads commuting to work there are so many idiots who just pull out without looking - if this helps them see me/makes them think I'm probably making progress (Even if I'm not) then I'm happy. I don't use them in built up areas in daylight though. I tend not to do it so much on the motorway since PC Copper will think I'm speeding.

Actually there is one village where a lot of cars parallel park and people pull onto my side of the road and pass the parked cars, even when I'm coming through - really pi55es me off - I always wait for other cars when it's their right of way. And what is it about people who follow the car in front past without looking what's coming making you brake. If you meet a green Audi A6 with it's headlights on in Binfield who doesn't stop for you it's me.

Funny how I only need the lights on in the A6 - everyone sees the TVR coming and waits/makes room.

Edited to say: I never use my fog lights though. I think I've only ever needed the front ones once coming up the M20 in a pea souper.
