I am looking at a BMw X5, something around four to five years old, three litre diesel.
Any views as to how good these are and running costs would be appreciated.
They are great. About a year back, swapped one for a Porsche Cayanne, regreted it, the porsche is c..p. So bought another x5. Very pleased with it. Very economical, 35mpg on a run. Feels a very stable car. Tyres on the Pig have to be replaced every 7k miles. X5 last a lot, lot, longer. Servicing costs, well it is a BMW. I'd go for it.Any views as to how good these are and running costs would be appreciated.

I have a 2005 X5 3.0d sport.
I absolutely love it- irrespective of some people perceived image I don't fit any of the aforementioned 'criteria' used to describe a typical X5 driver
About 25mpg round town, 38 on a run- maybe a little more if you use the cruise control.
As mentioned above, pretty good on tyres. My service intervals seem to be about 20k miles, and servicing isn't very expensive.
Great for towing boats / race cars etc, and pretty capacious- loads of space for kids / dogs etc. It goes really well, although mine has been mapped by DMS- unlike many other heavy 4x4's. The DMS map helped with the fuel consumption too!
Hope this helps,
Simon

Be careful of remaps and the gearbox in your car, they don't go well together ESP if you are towingI absolutely love it- irrespective of some people perceived image I don't fit any of the aforementioned 'criteria' used to describe a typical X5 driver

Your story changed somewhat during your remap thread ie your claims to how you drove it. I'd put it to you that your remap enabled the early demise when coupled with a driver that has a lead foot

Anyway, your car will have the ZF box rated upto 600nm, check with DMS to see what figure they cranked your engine to kick out without checking tolerance levels.
It's impossible to remap the older ones without exceeding tolerances.
2006 55, 28,000 miles, navigation etc, £18,999 before haggling:

I must admit the gearbox does make some odd noises sometimes.... thanks for the advice.
It was done about 40k ago, and so far so good, but appreciate entirely what you're saying. It has so much torque there is rarely any need to floor it; all the power seems to be within the top 30% of the pedal if that makes sense. I do tend to take it real easy when towing though...
