I have some spare land near the house - and indeed have been looking at a farm in South West France with plenty of spare acreage.

Question is, "forgetting" the need for planning permision/change of use etc.for a moment - how much would it cost to lay a half decent Kart track - with rumble strip apexes etc - clearly for private use - not commercial useage.

I think tracks can be made quite compact and have decent straights with the right design.

Just guessing but 80k sounds around the right mark.

How long's a piece of string? You'll need to design a layout and see if it will fit your space and take it from there I suppose.

Cheaper to just have a grass field and buy a couple of off road buggies for fun! ;

Yeah we already have1... ...but I have a budding Lewis Hamilton on my hands and want him to be able to get as much track time as possible - even after school etc.

I'd hoped either someone had, or knew someone who'd done it, or had a feel for how much laying that amount of tarmac would cost?

For a 1,000 ft linear track completely covered and a pit area, about $230,000 according to these American developers
http://www.mgcdevelopers.com/faq.htm

find out how much a very big barn costs to build, subtract that and you have an answer smile

Interestingly they think concrete makes a better surface than tarmac (lasts longer and doesn't need sealing from petrol & oil), should be cheaper than tarmac and you could lay it yourself once you had laid out a track and levelled the surface.

We have about a half mile driveway that is going to be tarmac, which will cost around the 80k mark so that is what I was basing my figure on.

why not just throw some bales of hay down and use off road karts?

95% of the fun for 1% of the cost....

a kart track opened at hooton near liverpool not so long ago and a track extension has been planned for the last few months, but waiting for the cost of oil to come down before it goes ahead due to the cost increase of the bitumen.

Don't know if they'll tell you costs but if you want to ask
0151 355 7513, ask for bob

Alternatively owner driver sessions are relatively cheap to attend and are readily available depending upon where you live, though if you get into racing it can be a fair bit of money
