This has happened to me a few times over the last 4 or 5 weeks. Is it just me????

Cruising down the road at or around the speed limit, biker up behind me. He's waiting for his chance to overtake, and does so when the oppurtunity arises.
Then, he sits right in the middle of the lane in front of me, effectively "queue jumping".
Then he'll stay in the middle, even if there is plenty of space in front, so I cant overtake him.
Why is it that he's happy to ride on the side of the lane to overtake me, but wont move from the centre once he's there?
I know it might sound petty, talking of juming the queue, etc, but just wondered id it happens to anyone else?

That's how you're supposed to ride. Be in the middle of your lane.

I posted a thread on the bikers forum a few months ago about this - 'Are bikers superior' I believe it was called. However, there are equally self-righteous car drivers (usually pensioners) who hoot and flash their lights if THEY deem you are acting outside THEIR scope of ability. Best ignored really, life's too short etc.

Yep, and thats fair enough. But it just seemed to me that the bikers were more concerned with overtaking then sitting in front.
What's the point in overtaking, just to sit one space ahead?

Yeah, know what you mean, no harm done an all that.
Funny you should mention about the car drivers.
I overtook a Construction Firm white van the other day - totally legit overtake, and the driver went nuts, flashing his lights and beeping his horn.
Some people seem to hate being overtaken.
And before anyone points out the irony here, I dont mind being overtaken!

Unless there was another reason for going slower once past, I don't see that as "normal" behaviour - I'd only pass if I wanted to go faster. But I'd sit in the middle of the lane once past as some drivers would otherwise see it as an invite to try and pass you up the inside, it's best to get that idea out of their heads ASAP and leave no gap that could be perceived as suitable for over/undertaking.

So we can see what's coming up a bit better. Especially if you're driving a van/4x4/look like a school run mum. The riding in the middle of the lane is so that car drivers don't try to undertake (yes they do try sometimes) even though they can't get anywhere.

You should have posted on Bike Banter.

Ps, Two wheels are far more fun than four. Huge smile factor, get one

So far I have found that a small majority of car drivers dont like it when I pull up at the front along side them and pull off first. But there are lots that just smile at me and are very polite.

This is purely speculation, not being a biker myself, but is the biker making themself more conspicuous by being the one in front. In essence the driver is more likely to see the biker if the biker is filling up the frontal view and not in some postage stamp view of someone who may not even use their rear view mirror. Self-preservation and all that. Plus the biker will have a better view than if they're looking 'through' traffic.

Make sure you've overtaken it beforehand.

The tree that is, you know the one that fell in the forest.

its hard to say without seeing what this particular biker did - but being in the middle of the lane is what you are trained to do for the reasons above.

Generally if its a queue - I keep going down the gap until i see a hazard, say a lorry coming other way or something of that nature, or a bike in the coming towards me, in which case i'd 'queue jump' and get in front of which ever car i've just overtaken, until another opportunity arises.

Or maybe i want to go left in a mile or so, so want the space. Or maybe the guy in front that i'm about to go past after you, is on his phone and i don't want to risk it.

There are millions of reasons.

If its an open road - i'd be careful to get out of the way once i'm passed - as just overtaking and slowing down to be in the way of a car driver is inviting a dodgy overtake which if he gets wrong, wipes me out.

Are bikers superior? No, but they are vulnerable - and therefore have the right in my opinion to act a little selfishly if necessary to avoid a risky situation

I was driving along the other day and a car overtook me and then drove along in the centre of the lane in front of me! oh no!

Tell you what, get a bike and learn to ride and youll discover what bad driving is really about. Car drivers arent just idiots, they are idiots who are trying to kill you!

Yeah, when I see a biker approaching from behind doing this, to be fair, I always move closer to the edge of the road to make his pass easier. Belive it or not, Ive seen some cars pull closer to the centre to try and block the overtake!!
