I had a rather ununsual thing happen to me today - i got Road Raged!

Although i'm not guilt free in the incident, I am amazed people behave like this!

OK - story goes like this.

I'm driving around the M25, between M4 and M40. In fast lane - doing approximate speed limit. Lots of cars about (around 10am). i'm in fast lane and making progress past the cars in middle lane. I am in a queue of cars - all going same speed.

Chap behind arrives quite quickly in a Range Rover sport - its no drama, he is a bit close but i'm used to having cars up my chuff from racing. Probably about 1 car length behind me at indicated 80mph.

Anyway - i indicate, pull into middle lane (as i'm after getting off at M40), then keep going (Ranger Rover guy still behind me, still as close does the same)

Then i indicate again and pull in the M40 turn off lane, still doing about 70mph indicated.

This is where it gets interesting. Ranger Rover man roars past me (and anyone that knows that road knows the opportunity closes quickly to get off there at speed) and then he cuts across me into the outside lane of the slip - causing me to brake.

I have a chuckle - think he is a bit of a tosser and think, this is going to be fun into the left hander as i know i can take it rather quickly as i do it everday. (by the way, i'm in a diesel C2!!).

As expected, Range Rover man brakes about 10 bus lengths too early and pootles around the left hander - by now, i am a long way behind, but take so much out of him on the brakes as i turn in i'm a bit too close to him - probably about 2 car lengths at 60mph.

Its a fast left hander, i'm watching through the corner so i can see its clear when st! he is hard on the brakes in middle of corner, so hard in fact he goes off the road to the right through all the 'marbles, stones' and i think possibly makes contact with barrier.

Its no drama for me, i'm on the brake quickly and could have stopped but this guy is back on the power, now doing about 30mph - so i'm still behind him doing 30mph (its a 70 limit i think)

He then lamps on the brakes again, down to about 15mph then again - and stops me, in the FAST lane on a fast corner.

he puts hazards on, gets out and comes towards me.

Now then, i used to be a bouncer when at Uni - so i know how not to have confrontation (especially as i wasn't sure what he was doing or why). So i open door, stay sitting down and take off seat belt.

He comes up to me, shouts at me - "why are you following me so closely on a motorway!"

I then calmly say - "you were closer than that to me, and at a higher speed, i didn't think i was too close"

He then says "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU"

I then laughed a bit cos it was all a bit ridiculous - then said (which i shouldn't) have " you have a fast car, why don't you learn to drive it around corners"

He walked off ranting got in his car and drove away.

I felt more nervous afterwards than i thought i would - but i am seriously confused. I know i wasn't sqeaky clean in that situation - but surely his reaction was way over the top - and a little odd?

Was he p'eed off cos he was so crap into the left hander?

was he p'eed off cos his wife got nailed by a man that owns a C2?

Or was it C2 rage - maybe he hates the French?!

I know what you mean, I'm a big lad too, but unplanned "experiences" still leave me shaking, it isn't nerves it's adrenaline coursing through your veins as your body prepares itself for trouble.

Ignore him, he's a prat.

Why do rant posts have to be sooooooooo long?

They are never concise.

Well, I've read your post twice and can't see what, if anything you contributed towards that exchange.

What a dick, he's blaming you for losing it on the corner.

folk don't like it when their road bullying tactics are pushed back onto them, simple as that smile gave him a shock!

Yeah, but Shirley using your racer's reflexes you should have just driven past him laughing as he went off-line.

should have given him my number and I would have shown him how to undertake like a pro, in a rangey.

again, the DG school of taking corners on 3 wheels in a rangey would have helped.

I think what you've seen here is something we see all the time - basically, he's in the wrong, cocked up and wants have a go at someone to cover the embarrassment.

I had something happen the other day - basically someone stepped out in front of me on my pushbike, and when I shouted "look out" so I didnt hit him and he knew I was there (it was dark and he was zig-zaggin down a cycle lane on foot, on his phone), he shouted "Tw@!". When I stopped, confused, and calmly pointed out that I wasnt the one at fault, you could see his embarrassment, to the point he said "all I said was watch it..."

Basically, blame someone else. If its clearly your fault, just find someone to get angry with and it'll all be ok. rolleyes

I had some plonker fly up behind me on an A road a few years ago. Hanging off my arse and generally being an utter tit about it. I have no idea what or why he was driving like that, but maybe he thought he was on a sure-fire-shag, but got turned down at the end? Who knows?

Anyway, I knew there was a big kink in the road that the majority of cars needed to slow down for, but knowing my car well, I could take pretty much flat out. I also could see that chappie was in a Volvo, not that well known for handling.

Long story short, I go round the corner and he goes straight on. He should have read the road signs (it was VERY well sign posted), not driven so close to me and understood that some cars handle and drive better than others. His car ended up in the middle of a field and me in utter hysterics for hours.

I didn't stop and the next day there was a big hole in the hedge and lots of tyre marks. I only hope that this driver learnt a lesson, but lets face it, he probably didnt. Shame, but sometimes there is a little justice in the world.

hehe

Also, I remember the time that my sis got road-raged once. An old Chavalier tried to get in front of her and force her off the road. The problem was it was on one of those long sweeping link roads on the M62 to get on / off. Basically the road doubles back on itself and its pretty tight, but there is only space for one car. Anyway, he pushes past but completely misreads the situation and that the outside of the road is covered with gravel. Lost grip and then ploughed into the barrier. Consequently gets dragged onto the barrier and cannot get free. This was in the morning and ended up having thousands of cars driving past during the day - all because some moron thought he would try and drive a girl off the road....

hehe

Unfortunately these situations are rare. More often its some innocent person who bears the brunt of some loonie.

It's because you referred to it as the fast lane :P

Oh and people these days can't possibly own up to something being their fault so have to find somebody else to blame it on.

I had an interesting encounter with an MX5 the other day. I was out for a nice early morning hoon around some of my old local roads when I stumbled upon an MX5 pooling along in front of me. The road was a bit windy, but I knew it well so I get up close-ish ready to pass where the road straightens out up ahead. It's not a massive space, but it was clear and he was slow, so I went for it. The MX5 driver then speeds up sharpish as I go to over take?! At the point where I am level with him he looks over and gives me the 'wr' sign! At this point the potential overtaking space is less than I'd want, so not wanting to cause any issues or drive dangerously I ease off and pull back in behind him where he eases off again! WTF?!

Some people are just prats and think they are in charge of the world. They are best avoided and ignored.

Agree 100%. But... You had a problem overtaking an MX5 in a 911?

If you know the rode really well you therefore know where you can overtake, so just hang back until aproaching the corner before the straight stretch and then boot it so that you end up coming up behind him at pace as it opens out onto the straight, if its clear go for it. If it isn't just brake and tuck back in. It means that they don't have a chance to stop you from overtaking as you pass them so quickly and they usually don't see you coming.

I used to take a short-cut to work along some nice, twisty NSL country lanes, punctuated with some 30mph villages. Obviously, I would hoon along the NSL bits and slow down for the villages. An old Volvo estate that I'd left for dead on the NSL bit, caught up with me through one of the villages and proceeded to take a great interest in my back bumper. There was a corner coming up that I knew from experience I could take at 30mph, without using the brakes, so I did exactly that. Cue lots of tyre-squealing noises, which I first thought might have been me, but a quick look in the mirror at the floaty-boaty Volvo rocking and rolling around the corner confirmed it wasn't.

Beat me to it there fella. The favoured transport of the 'bought my council house and MEW'd luck phuk' sorts.
