Oxfordshire County Council plans to impose blanket 20mph limits around Oxford (and Witney too).

If anyone around Oxfordshire fancies commenting on the plans for these blanket 20mph speed limits, you can read more http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/wps/portal/publicsit...

and take a short survey here: http://portal.oxfordshire.gov.uk/content/publicnet...

What?!

The traffic barely moves as it is, it certainly isn't what I would call the speeding capital of the world.

So glad I'm not in that part of the world anymore.

I hate it when blankets travel any faster than 20mph; they catch on your windscreen and can be really dangerous smile

There's a form in there for expressing your opinion. These are the questions for those that want to fill them in.

What are your views on the proposals to introduce 20mph limits in Oxford?
The proposals include all minor residential roads (including North Hinksey/Botley) and some major ones particularly in the city centre.

Do you feel these proposals bring any specific advantages to people who live, work or visit Oxford?

Do you feel these proposals bring any specific disadvantages to people who live, work or visit Oxford?

Are you responding as... (please tick one)

An Oxford, North Hinksey or Botley resident?
A representative of a group/organisation?
A councillor?
Other?

Please specify the context in which you are responding.

I think I can explain that:

Total Number of Councillors for Each Party following Elections

Description Number of Seats
Green Party 7
Independent Working Class Association 2
Liberal Democrats 16
The Conservative Party 0
The Labour Party 23
Other 0

I have to laugh at this one.

Been known for years that Oxford is a total Ludite, car hating council who will do anything in their power to stop cars getting anywhere near their city.

So.....don't go near their city, stay-away. That's what I do

Instead go to any one of the nearby towns who love cars coming into their city centre and spending lots of money in their shops, restaurants etc.

Thought I would go back to Oxford to see if anything had changed a year ago. No many cars in city centre but bloody loads of empty, noisey, soot ridden, polluting buses everywhere, most of them missing me by inches with their mirrors as they sped past me. Counld't hear myself think with all the noisy bus engines going. Haven't been back since.

I hear that Berks council are now lobbying the government to get the county line re-drawn because Oxford are not doing anything with their brown field sites on the Berks/Ox boarder.

What a bunch of total loosers !

Ah - that's the CITY council. This is the COUNTY council's proposal. They're the ones who run the roads and some of the parking. The scary thing is that the County Council looks like this:

Description Number of Seats
Green Party 5
Liberal Democrats 15
The Conservative Party 44
The Labour Party 9
Other 1

The Tories run the shop - and it's a Tory proposal.

I moved out of Oxford to south east oxfordshire, yards away from Berkshire after 11 years. So glad i did! Sadly I still work in Oxford, I wouldn't bother going there otherwise, to be honest 20mph limits on all but Banbury, Iffley & Woodstock rd would make no difference as they rarely move faster anyway. If they put a 20 limit on those 3 big wide, open, good visibiity, safe, not to busy rd's then I'd think they would be insane.

The most annoying thing about traffic in Oxford is it could be fine. I used to have to drive across Oxford and it was always a crawl,... except when the traffic lights broke down, then you'd be across town in miuntes and no sign of any queue's.

Why is it that almost every single person in power be it at a national or local level all seem to hate motorists? I dont understand, surely some of them (most of them) must drive themselves and understand people dont want this BS.

I would be interested to know who is behind it.

I live within an easy drive from Oxford, yet I never go there because it is such a nightmare to get into.

Consequently, Oxford never sees any of my disposable income.

Full of bloody students anyway.

In fact, in hindsight, other than the colleges architecture and punting on the river on a sunny day with your GF, I see no reason to ever go there.

Overcrowded studenty dump .

Easily scuppered by pointing out that CO2 emissions will be far higher if everyone drives everywhere at 20mph.

You seem to think that rational argument matters to OCC. biggrin Ah, how I wish that were true.

To paraphrase Monty Python, "Traffic calming shibboleth? One hump each. Queue on the right..."

It's the closing date for responses today chaps, so please drop the Council a note. All the details are above. The local cycling campaign have been bombarding the Council with demands that EVERY road within the Oxford ringroad is lowered to 20mph, so your support is really vital...

That's interesting. With a 30MPH limit, it's only going to be a tiny number of ubermensch nutters who can exceed it on a bike. Drop it to 20, though, and all of a sudden the limit is well within reach of a large number of cyclists.

Does the city council intend enforcing this limit?

Thanks to OP - This passed me by completely. Just completed the survey.

Commander Jameson: Just asked precisely that question. When I cycle in I am warmed up and cruising at ~25mph by the time I get into the centre.

No idea about enforcing it, but Aberdeen has a 20 mph in the city centre.

Tbh, you can't really get above that during the day, due to the volume of traffic. I have never seen or heard of anyone being pulled for speeding.

At night with less traffic about, the does appear to be ignored by 80% of drivers.
