Porsche is due tax tomorrow, anyone know when the increases are coming in.

Current online says it will cost £210 for 12 months. Is it better to do that, or 6 months and then 12 months in March (or whenever the charges go up)

So buy 6 months now, and 12 months in march then?

£210 for a Porsche? Mines that for a 1.6 Golf! Damn my underpowered and environmentally unfriendly car.

Am in the same boat with the TT... however I thought they'd changed the SORN rules to stop people cashing in before the new tax regime? I planned to buy 12 months now, but if I can get away with 6, cashing 1 in/letting it go for March, and renew for a full 12 in Feb, this is a far better route for me...

Edited to say, I thought the changes came in during March, not 1st April. If that's definitely the case, 6 months bought now, and 12 on the 30th March sounds like the way forward...

Mine was £300 in September '07 and had gone up to £400 when renewed at the end of August this year.

Costs more for the VED than it does to insure!

Quote - "The Treasury has said but not officially confirmed that cars emitting over 226g CO2/km but bought before Budget 2006 will move into Band K in 2009/10 - and will continue to benefit from a reduced rate, and only in 2010/11 will these cars be placed into the band that corresponds to the car's actual CO2 emissions."

Vague, but anyone with a car emitting co2 at 226g/km or above might only be charged at the Band K rate (£300) until 2010, unless The Government run out of cash and change their mind.

Where it states "bought before Budget 2006" I'm sure they must mean First Registered prior to Budget 2006?

are there not any hints that the autumn budget will see an announcement that they plan to abolish these latest VED hikes? I heard somewhere that there were plans to revise the idea as it is not considered Green to be getting rid of perfectly good cars just to go buy something which doesnt cost as much?

  • * the VED will go up on budget day - you must buy your tax BEFORE march 11th(?) otherwise you will be stuffed. Do your SORN towards the end of Feb, and renew VED from March 1st.

As your application form for VED is database linked, I'd expect that means the current owner bought it before budget 2006. The tax itself is applicable to all cars post-2001 sometime, so it can't be dat of first registration.

Which is a bugger as I was thinking of taking advantage of the rapidly dropping prices on post-2001 petrol cars in the near future frown

As an aside, I can see a lot more address changes notified to DVLA being categorised as change of owner. It's already not infrequent, add in the chance to clobber you for more VED and they'll be at it like a dog eating beetroot eek

I'm sure the phasing in of the bands above 226g/km have been delayed as a statement was made in May from the Treasury to that effect.

I bought 6 months VED for the S4 in August, renewal will be March 1st next year so I'll get another 12 months at £210. Hopefully in 2010 I'll be able to get 12 months VED at £300 so it'll be 2011 before I start paying £450 a year.

Going to have to SORN the wife's car though as the VED is due next month. I'm not aware of any restriction with SORNing it on 28th Feb and buying new tax on 1st March unless someone here knows different.....

The statement in May (of which I can hardly find any trace, other than on the Honest John site) mentioned that retrospective tax would receive a reduced increase. From April 2009 it would mean £300 (ish) instead of the £400 (ish) in April 2010. It is still an increase though frown

Where's the value for money there though? My car puts out over 320g carbon/km in stock form.

That means I'm paying considerably less than 56p per g carbon/km.

Are you pushing out 258g carbon/km plus??? biggrin

Buying 6 then 12 months will NOT work. The last people that could do this were those that had their tax run out at the end of August. I KNOW as I did all the workings out as mine runs out at the end of Sept frown

I bought 12 months (no point buying 6 months as it's more expensive per month and you have to pay the higher rate months earlier).

Buy 12 months then do the SORN in feb/march. I "hear" the govt. are wise to this and will try to scupper it (they can't under current rules).

The other problem is that the DVLA will be inundated with LOADS of people doing this and I doubt their processes will cope and you may end up having to keep the car SORNED or wait and pay the higher rate.....
