Is that the 136hp 2.0L HDi? Is it the same I got in my Peug 307?

I get 45 if I pay attention, on short city runs it drops, I get an average of about 35mpg...

Average 43-45 in my 206 Hdi with the same lump. That's on a 30 mile commute which is dual track to the motorway, then M42/40 at an average of 80-90 (that particular section is derestricted wink )

I suppose your car's blunt shape (I was going to say your Partner's blunt shape but thought that might've read the wrong way!) may not be helping matters.

2 litre 4 pot, BMW 320d lump, essentially.

Bit of long journey, bit of school run, usual family stuff really.

Seems a tad on the low side to me. I haven't got a diesel to compare with but My Civic Type-R did about 30 on what I reckon was a similar cycle to the one you describe and the current 145bhp 2.0 Focus (petrol) does 36-38 but with quite a bit of m'way (probably 40%). As a result, your figures seem a bit, well, cack.

Provided the car is fine, perhaps worth a look at a remap...? (Cue still not as fast as a 335d posts etc...)

I can highly recommend a call to Stu and Kenny at www.remapping.co.uk if you go down that route. They know their stuff and can advise. Top blokes.

How many miles has it done?

A mate had a 2000 306 HDI with the same engine and was regularly getting 600 miles out of a tank (A-road/B-road commute)

However, this was only after it had done about 60k.

You may not quite see that due to more brick-like aerodynamics but it should be up there....

MPG was also noticeably better after being serviced.

Seems wrong that a Berlingo should get similar mpg to a Freelander made of pig iron with massive transmission losses.

How full is it? A van stacked full of crap can easily weigh another few hundred kgs, which will obviously affect mpg.

My 306hdi (same engine) does 40mpg driven hard, 45mpg normally and 50-55mpg if I'm intentionally gentle with it.

EGR can actually improve mpg when on short journeys, although it varies from car to car.

My average is about 520 out of a tank but I have got close to 600 by sticking to 70 on the motorway.

Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but are you keeping under 2k rpm, or thereabouts, and therefore off the turbo?

I know these engines have MAF problems too, my mates went causing his to over fuel the whole time - a lot of people often mis-diagnose this as faulty injectors - You could have the injectors cleaned - they may be mucky creating an iffy spray pattern??? I'd say that is low mpg for citroen diesel - My VAG 1.9 TDI pretty much does 40+ no matter how hard you drive it - on a long run I worked it to be 58mpg last time I checked

I'm not an expert but my friend had a Xsara picasso HDI which ran badly, e.g. ran on a bit when you switched off, smoked badly, poor MPG. He took the car for MOT and they told him it failed on emmissions and that it need new injectors. He paid around £400 quid to have all this sorted/fitted only to find the car still ran like a bag of st. I suggested he took it to my mechanic who had a fault diagnosis carried out only to find it was the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) - it sits on the air box and metres the air flow going into the car. He then told my friend that injectors rarely need replacing and that if the garage he took it to had diagnosed it properly they could have replaced the sensor for around £150 and it would have been fine. I'm not saying that is the solution but it may be - I guess if its running fine it may not be.

This sounds really patronising, but have simply tried replacing the air filter and running on some decent oil? I know dervs smoke a lot and lose economy when the air filters get blocked - esp in dusty condition. might be worth a shot for around a tenner and 5 minutes work fitting it? - My Audi was miles better to drive and runs far more economically since I did an oil and filter change a couple of weeks ago - is it long since its been serviced?

They are big motors though esp with the B-M I'd look at the equivilent petrol model for comparisson - that said I've driven a Beemer diesel and as they are quite "sporty" in nature you tend to drive them that way and as a result get less than amazing economy - I'd expect a 2.0HDI to give approx 40mpg round town and more so on an extra urban/ long run

I had the older 1.9 version and it was never great ,ok it was a van but I was lucky to get 350miles out of a tank full on its weekly crawl around town .The best I ever got out of it was completely empty (no extra weight ) and driving at 55mphish was 480miles

I gave up on diesels after this and went back to petrol smile

edited to add might be worth while getting it chipped

Peugeot 307 2.0 HDI sold because it never bettered 42mpg even when I tried really hard after a conscientious running in.
Manufacturers boast was 55mpg.
They lied.
