Evening Peeps,
First post, as I tend to merely read these threads whilst at work - however, I need some help.
I was debating the idea of purchasing a Mazda MX-5. Unsure which model/ version, but post mark1 and for under £6k.
On revealing this idea to the office, I was surrounded by hurls of laughter and the guys asking when I was due to step out of the closet :-(
In my defence, I explained that a 25 year old male is able to Buy, Own and run a Mazda MX-5.
Not only because of the style, build quality, over all cost, but also for the RWD aspect.
But they seem intent on putting the MX-5 in the same catagory as the MG's roadster, MR2 mrk3's and so on and so on. (s200's were suitably left alone.)
So, passing this question over to the enthusiasts:
Can a 25 year old male buy, own and run a Mazda MX-5 - without the image of being repressed beauty stylist.....
Cheers.

I did see that thread and had a look through, however I wanted to get some fresh answers from "Car enthusiasts" rather than "MX-5 enthusiasts"
Otherwise it would be kind of like asking an alcoholic if they'd like a beer..... :-)
Not quite. I drive an MX-5 because they're so good. I don't champion their cause because I drive one and feel the need to justify my it.Otherwise it would be kind of like asking an alcoholic if they'd like a beer..... :-)
Get one. You'll probably enjoy it.

This is exactly what I've been saying :-)
Unlike other roadsters, this one is bought for the driving experience. The ability to be pushed and not pulled, in a little relatively in-expensive, well made car.
I don't care what they think

I had my audi coupe for over a year with them calling it the pink pansy (name derived from the colour fading, and the sound of a panza.) But it's me who gets to experince it, not them

Cheers guys and gals! Got the answer I was expecting, ahem - looking for :-)
...and yes, they drive rep'mobils :-)

yes you can - I had one as a company car at 24 and found it highly amusing when everyone at the office called me 'gayer' and 'hairdresser' for ordering it...but when it arrived they were queuing up to do swaps with me at the weekend .
And its still plodding on
If you spend your life worrying about what other people think about you and what you own/buy/do/delete as appropriate then you are going to waste a lot of time and end up looking back and thinking what if.
I won't say that an MX-5 is the best thing to buy for £6k it isn't. However, our Mk1 snotter is a hoot to drive, cheap to run and you always get a wave from other owners. Whilst our is a 1.6 what it lacks in horsepower it makes up for it in character and driveability.
Just do it, and get the back end out (obviously under controlled condtions)

oh I really don't care what peeps think, this was an office debate where I tried to correct their views on 2-seater roadsters. Noting my comments above... I used to walk into the room to find the Pink Panther theme being hummed :-)
But this was for my Audi Coupe 2.3 20v - a lot of fun! (Which has now gone to a better home.)
If i had a bang on the head and thought the Smart cars were a good purchase, I'd buy one regardless of other peoples opions. Although for this I would be disowned - even by the missus!
But yes :-) - A man can drive around in an mx-5 smiling like a 7yr old waiting for santa.
Darn it, why have you moved this post !?!
I did state:
"I did see that thread and had a look through, however I wanted to get some fresh answers from "Car enthusiasts" rather than "MX-5 enthusiasts"

naturally, mazda owners are going to appreciate the mx-5. This defies the whole reason behind me posting this thread. Sheesh!
Please move back into the "general discussion," for a general debate - not a specialised debate.

mically moved back to GG for you .
while im here might as well have a say ...
Ive come from bikes back to a car and ive always had a soft spot for the 5 , basic RWD and a wonderfull gearchange jap engineering you cant go wrong , its really not all about power with the 5 , my works vectra will waste it in a stright line but get to a bend and the vectra will send you a letter to tell you about the road surface etc whereas the mx5 uses skype , the mx5 just feels alive on the road the steering chatters away to you like a nosey old woman over the fence , if you need info the mazda rack will give you loads , the body control is pretty good , my 95 1.8 still feels tight after many years of use (and bigdods
)
it really is a fun thing to just throw about , the girlfriends named the car Kermit and he will be with us for a long time , even if i have to ship him to south africa . i doubt i will sell it , it just nice to drive a car that you feel connected to with no idiot saftey devices fitted .
i love the looks of my classic mk1 the pop up lights are now from another era and wont appear again , the mk2 onwards do nothing from me , but the mk1 just feels a bit more raw and alive , like the golf the mx has grown soft during its incarnations over the years , now if mazda had the balls to make a lightweight mk3 with a supercharged 2.0 lump or the volvo 2.5 5pot engine

I used to have an MX-5. It was the most fun car I ever had. I didn't care if anyone made fun of it/me. While they were plodding home to their dull lives in their Vectras, my girlfriend and I were hooning around country lanes with the top down, seeing places we'd never thought of visiting, because we wanted to get out there and have some fun.
I still grin thinking about it
