Had the OH's car on PH & ebay for the last 2 weeks with no joy so decided to give auto trader a try, for the last few years I've used PH & eBay whenever we've changed cars and it's always been problem free.

I have to admit that the last time I advertised with autotrader they still used to come round and take the photo themselves(god I'm getting old).

So placed an add online that started Saturday evening and by Sunday lunchtime I'd already had 4 calls, with 3 people wanting to view + no canvassers called, so all in all quite happy thus far.

The 3 individuals wanted to view Monday & this morning so as I've a couple of days off I swap cars with the OH as the weathers rubbish & the roads are filthy at present (nothing new there) give the car a thorough valet, spent gawd knows how long on the phone with the 3 giving directions, advising that I'll call if the first person buys so not to waste a journey etc...

So Monday comes, 1st viewing arranged for 11am, by 1pm still a no show with no call, so I give the 2nd viewer a call, 'yes will be with us for 4pm', yes you guessed it 6pm and no show...

So ring the viewer for Tuesday, 'Oh great will be with you for 9:30', it's now 11am and no show....

Why oh why do people think it's OK to do this, god it only takes a 3 second call to say they're not coming....

AHHHHHH... never never had these messers with PH or ebay..
Thanks rant over..

Sorry to hear that. I was a no-show once (Drove past and the car looked a mess) so I rang and gave some excuse about getting too excited and it turns out I can't afford the insurance. Maybe a little cheeky, but I didn't want to cause offence, and at least he knew not to stay in all night.

Why not just sell it to a dealer. Ah, so they won't give you as much money as selling it privately.

You won't get your two days of missed life back.

There is a tactic. After a few no shows, or dismissive views, you'll be more amenable to a bid in the bks.

ha ha.. that's very tempting after the past few days of messers, but I don't really see dealers buying cars at present

Sounds silly but I've always found the best way to avoid this kind of crap is to price the car keenly.

Whenever I've sold a car that wasn't really a bargain, people have dragged their feet and messed me about. You get there in the end but it's not straight forward.

Sell a car for a comparatively cheap price and you don't get messed about - invariably a bloke turns up almost immediately with a wad of cash.

Indeed. Friend of mine used to send his mate round first, kick round the car and pick out every tiny fault, tell the owner how much it would cost to sort out and then bid him a derisory amount.

A couple of days later this chap then used to call round, offer a hundred or two more and mostly walk away with a sale. Sneaky bugger.

Yep I agree, already did my homework compaired it with others for sale on PH, AT & eBay and its actually the cheapest available for age, spec, mileage.

So I must just be having an unlucky run..

I've been trying to sell a 96 Mazda 323, for a couple of weeks.

Had a few calls, again giving directions, but so far no one has turned up to view the ole girl, I've even dropped the price by 16%; still no takers. Even though it's a 3 owner 83K miler and it's the cheapest around.

I guess that people aren't wanting to buy at the moment.

If I don't get a sale by Friday I'll drive it to the local auctions just to be rid of it. It's blocking the garage the Tiv's in.

I've never had a problem on autotrader.

mind you I always price them so cheap you'd be stupid not to go and view ASAP in case it's really the bargain it seems.

I once had three guys arguing over who was first in line to buy an old battered fiat 126. in the end I had to say. Those who have the cash on them and will pay the full price step forward.

1 guy steps forward.

Then the other 2 start ranting on about how it's got a dent and a bit of rust and they need a test drive.

The first guy says "I saw you drive up the Road so I know it goes"

I says 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 sold to the man with cash. Would you like a receipt sir.

I gave my last car away as I couldn't be bothered with the inevitable hassle of trying to sell it. Sure, it wasn't worth much and wasn't in perfect condition, but it was a daily driver and had several months of tax and MOT still left on it.

Because they are tts. Simple.

I had just sold a car last week. First person to contact me sent an email with "Very interested in car, ring XXXXXXXXXX". An hour after the email was sent I rang up. No answer. And again later. No answer. Then the next day and left a message. Nothing. I mean, what was going on in that ct's head?

In my case the only thing that occurred to me was that perhaps it was a scam to collect the phone Nos of sellers, being that on PH you can protect your phone No. against canvassers in the ad (can't remember what the system's called). I made sure I used 141 every time and didn't leave my number, just in case, although 90% likely it's just a tt.

Must be this one http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/749895.htm

Are you in Sheffield?

Car doesn't look too bad, green is always a dodgy colour to sell plus pictures taken in dull weather which doesn't show it off too well. It is cheap though seeing as you would probably accept £450-500. Good car a daily hack/1st car etc..

My gribe with AT is twofold

One, the use of £295 in the title then, in the text "sorry, my mistake, car is £2950".

Done to avoid the full listing fees.

They should have a report this ad button!

The other is more sellers in general. Call up about a car, make it clear to the seller that I have had them before so go through some detailed questions - saves their time and mine whether worth looking. Go out to see the car....immediately apparent that has been in a crash, half the items not working, rust when assured that there was none and the full service history was a book that was filled in by the same person with the same pen....if you are going to fake a history, at least pass it around the table and use different pens!! Why waste the buyers time with this nonsense - they are not going to just go ahead and buy it when they get there despite the porky pies!

I've always found whenever I've priced a car below market value, I seem to incurr more messers who want it cheaper still. Wnen I've priced at market value and made sure that the car is as right as it can be I end up selling it for usually well within 10% of the asking price.

What kind of car is the OP selling?

If it's the sort of car that has an owner's club (and this isn't just old classics - most modern hot hatches, luxury saloons, small sports cars etc have them too), you might do best contacting the owner's club to see if anyone is looking for a decent example. Owner's club members tend to be more willing to pay a more accurate price as they respect the car for what it is, rather than just seeing it as a 'banger' or bringing up quibbles over the warranty.

It's the wifes daily a 2007 (57) plate Dodge Calibre CRD SXT Sport, so cheers for the pointer but not really an option for the owners club route.
