I have two 'jerry' cans, both of which were used for petrol until recently when I had to store diesel in them, will swilling them out with reg. unleaded before filling them back up with petrol get rid of the diesel remains or will they be ok without the swilling?

Be OK without.

It may be ok without but I'd think that swilling it round with petrol would remove the diseasel, petrol being a solvent - the reason why you should never put petrol in a modern diesel.

Thanks, I went for the safe option of swilling with petrol first.

I'm not sure combining petrol and matches is a very good idea ..... you might well find you make yourself eligible for a Darwin award.

Would it be possible to make an engine that could run on either? Or even both?

Early Land Rover 2.5 diesel being one. Ours will run on diesel, petrol, vegetable oil, old engine oil, paraffin, barbeque fluid and most strong spirits. Pretty much anything vaguely flammable and a lot of stuff that isn't gets poured in for use around the yard and it still chugs around quite happily, albeit with a bit of smoke every now and then. I would imagine this only works as it's a pre historic engine designed to run on whatever fuel you can scavenge in the remotest of 3rd world countries, but on the whole it seems to do ok. smile
