Bit hard to narrow down with no requirements except 'fun', and that comes in many forms!

I just bought an S70 T5 for a grand. It has leather, climate, xenons and all the toys. OK, its not traditionally 'fun' in the sense of my MX5, but it does have 240bhp which means it is pretty sprightly.

They can be found, there was a nice sounding 1997 328i touring in my local paper for under a grand the other week, a real car for all occasions.

Mine was £1k, bought recently. It's admitedly high mileage but at this price bracket you can't be picky about that. Buy on condition, I did and so far it's been faultless, apart from an over-sensitive alarm. It's no sports car, but for a every day runabout it's certainly good fun. From looking before the coupes seem to have a harder life than the saloons and tourings.
