The AWACS isn't a radar detector, i.e. it doesn't detect radars, it IS a radar.

This is a radar detector i.e. the protrusions on the tailfin of this Luftwaffe Tornado IDS

Bit of an ambiguous question, do you mean best detector in the world being or the best detector for a car? If it's for a car then you have posted this in the wrong forum, try the car forums.

No problem, I had to look to see if we had a radar detector one but the closest was Navigation systems, so I put it here

I think the Valentine 1 and the Passport 9500/8500 series are considered the most effective. I looked at both and ended-up with the Passport, for a couple of reasons. V1 is VERY good and has the ability to scan laterally, as well as in front/behind and identifies the direction of the threat. The latest one also has a learning feature so that it can eliminate static 'decoy' signals.
The downside is that it looks kind of home-made and the windshield bracket is a bit naff. Other than that, they are very effective devices.
I have a Passport 8500 (bought it before the 9500 was launched). It doesn't have the lateral scanning feature of the V1, but it is just as sensitive, slimmer and the bracket is like a limpet. I wanted a smaller device, because I prefer to hard-wire it, rather than use the coiled cord with a fag-lighter attachement. Mine is positioned above the rear view mirror, so it's virtually invisible from the outside, but the rear sensor can still 'see' out through the rear screen. I bought an 'Invisicord' and hooked it up to the power supply in the rear view mirror.
It has saved me countless times.
Don't dismiss the V1 on my say-so - they are tits. It just didn't suit my application as well as the Passport does.
Postscript: Mike Valentine was a development engineer at Cincinnati Microwave (who make the Passport), so he knows his sh!t.
