New 911 7 speeder
Discussion
Just seen this weeks 5th gear and really watched it to see the new 911.
Claimed combined cycle is 28mpg..... actual result 33mpg which included all sorts of driving by Tiff. Also he even did a full throttle mile race in it and even then that caused the mpg to drop to a mere 31mpg.....frankly stunning.
Also got me thinking this is a 3.8ltr 385bhp sports car. The Focus ST has been commented on many times in the pas as liking a drink with many struggling to beat 25mpg on a run - that only has 220bhp and performance wise is like a top of the grid F1 car vs a mid field/back of the grid F3 car.
Ford ST kicking aside - this mpg real world driving clearly shows everyone how pittyfull their cars are how inefficient & how puny their power.

All down to direct injection and lean burn tech.
Used in diesels for a while now.
Is this what the new BMW 330i has to enable it to give a geniune 39.8mpg combined cycle - note the 6cylinder BMW's do not currently have stop start... so when that gets rolled out clearly the 330i will be into the low 40's combined and the 330d will be into the low 50's combined!!Used in diesels for a while now.
Makes you think what are cars like VW's 2.0 TSFI getting a mere 36mpg combined doing.... 1ltr less capacity & 86bhp less and less torque yet uses more fuel & its a lighter car...

I understood that this was the average mpg over the whole duration of the test. I would expect the mpg during the mile race to be more like 5 mpgRegarding the fuel efficiency of Porsches.
I bought a Boxster S last weekend and used up my first tank of fuel by yesterday. I was stunned to see that after some sensible commuting and some hoonage (think inaugural high speed run, whoa!) the car averaged 31.2mpg!!
My Mk1 MX5, a full 1.4 litres smaller and god knows how much lighter, only averaged about 28mpg.

If only they'd give it a shift lever that worked in the right direction and proper left-down, right-up paddles, instead of playing Porsche knows best.
I think I read somewhere recently that Porsche would be back tracking on this in the near future.....Bibbs said:

I drove one for a few days, and quite how this arrangement got 'signed off' is beyond me. BigLepton said:

Does your 2.3 Turbo mazda with 255bhp?? give 39.8mpg combined cycle and a genuine 39.8 not pie in the sky - or is it much less if so then clearly its not like with like.
The Nissan Carisma had GDI (direct petrol injection) years & years ago but it was rubbish and barely any improvement over the usual model. The 330i is a massive step fwd & likewise the porche 911. Maybe its the next generation of DI & your Mazda has the older set up?

I drove one for a few days, and quite how this arrangement got 'signed off' is beyond me. All very odd. I was used to it in the end, but it never felt right and I continued to occasionally change up to 5th approaching corners instead of down to third.
