absolutley gutted! The golf-mobile currently sits on my drive, a shadow of its former self

Heres the story:

I left work a bit early, flicked my lights and my wipers on cause it had just started to drizzle. NSL road with two roundabouts, when through the first fine, but alas..... got halfway round the second understeered into a lamp post. Arse. Was probably doing about 35 - 40.

Made a lovely mess of the front end, so i reckon its a write off.

Ive only had it two months

Ive noticed since i got it that the tires had f* all grip in the wet, and ive been thinking of changing them. Ah well.

Up til now i reckoned i was quite handy behind the wheel, but knowing the theory and putting it into practice are two different things.

anyways, i called my dad to get some help, and he told me to inform the BiB even though no one else involved. So i did, and very nice they were too (didnt breathalise me though, i though that was compulsary??) but it looks like Warwickshire CC may be able to claim against me for damage to their post, which incidentally is fine.

Luckily Im fine, cept for dented pride and a sore back. so two q's:

1. How long have WCC got to make their claim?

2. Whats the beef re my insurance, seeing as i dont need it anymore?

If it's a write-off then the policy "dies" with the car...no refunds.

Assuming WCC dont claim, i was only TPFT anyways, so i wouldnt claim. Can i not "voluntarily" bin it, and some of the remainder of my money be used against my next car?

Or would that be too perfect?

P.S. I didnt reply to the how many crashes thread!

The highways agency or their representative will make a claim for the dmage you did, though it took autolink a month and half to get in touch with me regarding the armco that I..um...flattened... you simply need to pass their letters onto the insurance company as far as I know, unless you want to pay for it yourself which is hellish expensive from what I have been told as they charge youm the laour costs as well. a friend flattened a 40mph road sign and that cost £500!

From what i can tell, the big post is absolutley fine, i don't even think it took the paint off. They'll probbaly try and claim anyway though

So what do you do if you are understeering like buggery on a wet day like today. I tend to lift of and then when the engine braking kicks in the back end comes round a bit. Whats the script with front and rear wheel drive? Are you proper Bolloxed?

Lift and brake GENTLY. DO NOT, under any circumstances, turn the wheel more. It'll just understeer even more. Oversteer with front wheel drive you put enough throttle on not to spin the wheel and opposite lock. It'll drag the front end round. I've done a wet handling/skid course so I do have some training in this

Probably would have done better not telling the police as no good will come of that post.

p.s. I find it attrocious that none of our roadside furniture is deformable in an impact. It would save a lot more lives than scammeras.

Watch out if you give a statement to the police, you could be on for a "due care and attention", it happened to me a few years back after hitting a fence coming off a round about under the speed limit.
Probably will not happen but just be wary.

FWIW - I ended up paying £50 to have the lamppost inspected and that was that.
