Looking to buy a cheap second hand V8 Range Rover from a main dealer I was told that prices have gone up 20% since December....should I believe him and rush out and buy one now ..?
I think V8Mate was saying that dealers are currentyl struggling to get stock and so auction prices are going up... Big Rod said:
I asked a trader how much he'd give me for my '03 plate Frontera yesterday as a trade in.
£1100!!!
Now I know they're not 'great' cars in the grand scheme of things, but it's only a shade over 5 years old!!!
been offered £800 as a trade in for my bmw 330i (full service history) 2001.£1100!!!

Now I know they're not 'great' cars in the grand scheme of things, but it's only a shade over 5 years old!!!
I've just purchase a 2005 Golf GTi and 2007 Touareg form a private dealer - he said that he was having his busiest month for about the past 6.
he said that in Nov / Dec 2008 there was a lot of quality 2nd hand car stock available for good prices but Jan / Feb 2009 they have seen a distinct lack of any "decent" stock being made available. He said something similar to V8Mate auction reports - basically the big main dealers (merc / BMW / VW / Audi / LR) are buying up all the auction stock and increased prices leaving independents struggling or having to pay higher prices for better stock thus pushing up the prices.
he went on to say that he only sees this situation getting worse as the new regs are so far down that that the knock on effect will happen 12-18 months down the line where there are much fewer 2nd hand cars coming through - sign of the times I guess!
Before I bought the Touareg I looked at Disco 3's - in November I could have got a great spec 3 year old for £19k - now all up at around £21k to £22k

How much did you think your Frontera would be worth Rod?
Serious question.
Well, to give you a rough idea, when I bought just under two years ago, they were selling very quickly, (I specifically wanted one of these and just couldn't get to them quick enough!!!), for about £7k - £8k. To be fair, I got what I thought was a fairly good deal on mine at the time.Serious question.
I tried to sell it last year, (conveniently just after fuel prices went through the roof and the VED fiasco hit the headlines!), for about £6k and reduced the price over the course of six weeks to about £4250 and didn't get one serious phonecall for it.
I appreciated that it'd taken a bit of a hit, and that it'd be worth less as a trade in, but I'd have thought on around the £3k mark or thereabouts.
And that wasn't the dealer making it up, that was from Parkers.
I know it's not a great deal of money in the grand scheme of things, but like many people, I don't have money to burn at the moment.
Do you think that's unreasonable?

Is it a diesel? If so, I'll give you £805. Otherwise, no deal.Edited by Mr Gear on Monday 16th February 12:01

it's ok I've been shown a 1.5k bid since but still not selling it for under 2.5k

I've had to admit defeat on this poxy babyseat and sell my Supra, what I've noticed is virtually everything has held or gone up in the last three months though there are a few bargains floating about.
What kind of Supra?I've been in discussions with SWMBO and a MKIII was part of the deal.

Just spoke this morning to a good friend who's in the trade (I do buy my cars from him) and they are seriously struggling to get stock. He also told me that their unofficial buyer who looks for stuff for them at auctions told them that good stock is going through the auctions above book, eg a RRS S'charged (no detail on exact vehicle) went through for £4K more than book. The buyer chap said that it was just too strong for him so he bought nothing at that auction. My friend and his business are down to their lowest level of stock in years! Less new cars is def. having an impact on supply and prices.

Obviously the car is worth more than that to you so with that in mind it's not unreasonable to expect more.
Not sure if there is a middle ground though. Dealers won't want to pay a lot and you won't want to "give it away".
Tricky.

4X4s are supposed to be recovering from their recent slump, so I can believe it, but I get the impression second hand car prices on the whole are still going down?Bolebroke said:

MKIV TT.
If you look in the classifieds, prices are all over the place, there is no 'trend' to get as a guide to advertise. Too low and people report you as a scam, too high and the phone won't ring.
Yeah, I know. There's a couple of really tidy MKIIIs about at the moment with very reasonable price tags, but by the same measure, there're a couple of real dogs with grossly inflated prices. Go figure! If you look in the classifieds, prices are all over the place, there is no 'trend' to get as a guide to advertise. Too low and people report you as a scam, too high and the phone won't ring.
