just found this link..... 900bhp? Seriously?

I'm pleased to see it has a "Spoon earthing kit"....presumably to bring the spoons who think 800 bhp in a FWD shopping trolley is a good idea back to earth.http://www.tdi-north.com/gallery/tdi2-6.htm
That one was made to be the first FWD sub 10 sec quarter mile IIRC.
How handy, ive got the copy of banzai with a min article on it here

So...yeh!

Im pretty sure I have seen a video of that car pulling away from a Ferrari F40. Will have a look to see if I can find it.
Very very fast but not much point.
it'll do it once. then need new tyres,cv joints etc.Very very fast but not much point.
it is utterly pointless
Drag racing is not pointless to those who compete and want to break records.
Think outside of the box.

In that vision, every track-oriented car is pointless.
Take the Caterham, its not practical, too small, not comfortable,...
As Dave pointed out, it's built for a purpose. I think it's very cool. (and respect for the person getting it past the 1/4mile sub 10 sec without finding the ditch

+1 people making comments like this really have to stop.
Of course there may be cheaper ways to dive under 10 secs for the quarter, but achieving it in the first place is pretty impressive, plus this one's specifically built to bring a FWD car under that barrier, and succeeded. If we need to talk about whether it would be any good as a road car, we should also recognise that thee's loads of tuned/converted RWD cars out there that have rather too much power for their own good, too. I think my old-school TVR which wears what must be pretty much the best suspension money can buy, is pretty well balanced with 300ish bhp but that doesn't stop folks with similar cars pushing for 400+ and spending loads to achieve it.
As for the yawn-inducing 'shopping trolley' comments aimed at everything FWD with a hatchback - I estimate at least 98% of us realistically shouldn't fancy their chances against a Mégane R26R on a challenging road. I know I wouldn't.

The serious side of FWD racing came on leaps and bounds in recent years, more so in the US. The NHRA import class was to be a hive of R&D for it, but it doesn't seem to have been pushed that far in terms of publicity, since.
There's a few quick FWD racecars around (as in non road legal), making circa 1000hp from EcoTec and Honda Vtec based lumps. These run anywhere down into the low 7's IIRC (but as I mentioned, in race trim, meaning more often than not, wet weight of sub 2000lbs, slicks, wheelie bars and C12/16/Alky).
From what I'm told, they're quite a tricky thing to handle. The chassis dynamics are quite unique, and the front end has to work quite hard with it doing both the steering and putting power to the ground.
Be it pointless or not, it's different. Variety brings interest, and interest is needed for the sport, and technology to progress.
The thing to note, which is probably stating the obvious, is that when you're producing this amount of power, in FWD layout, you're no longer talking about Ripspeed / Halfords clad ricer burners, driven by Burberry wearing spotty nosed teenagers, which TBH, is partly the reason that FWD still has a reputation for being quite boy racer based, more so in the UK than the US.

£117,000.... for a 3 series... christ on a bike. Yeah, 4.2 seconds, fantastic... but the M3 does it in under 5 seconds so if its all the same I will have one of them for £40k, a Gallardo for the weekend and go away for a month to the Caribbean...
