Tax disc renewal puzzle - stupid computer.

6 months ago you may remember there was discussion here about the new tax rates for big engined cars. The suggestion was to surrender the tax you had, buy a 6 months tax and then renew for a year now (end of Feb) to lock in the low rate before they rise on 1st April. Financially this was worthwhile as the rates were going up a lot.
I did that and it all looked to work, new 6 month tax disc from local post office, sent old disc with a few months to run to DVLA and got the refund.
Been waiting for the renewal this month as the disc on the car says it runs out tomorrow and....nothing.
Try and tax online and it says not due. Check the libility date on the DVLA website and it says not due until 1/8/09 !!!
That date doesn't relate to anything - the current tax disc was bought on 1/9 and so expires tomorrow, 28/2. The disc I sent back for refund (and I got the refund) expired 31/10
So, what to do.
Choices seem to be:
Go the the Local vehicle licence office and try and get them to take some money for a new tax disc. Expect to be stared at and told the computer doesn't make mistakes.
Ignore it until I receive a reminder as nobody checks the physical disc any more and the DVLA computer says taxed.
Pretend I've lost it, apply for a duplicate and see what happens !

Have you tried speaking to the DVLA (0870 240 0010) or looked for the nearest number?
If you got your 6 month disc before surrendering your 12 month one what did you expect the computer system to do? Computers are not infallible, I've been testing software for years and not every eventuality is catered for.

OK, I had a spare 10 minutes and called them, loved the voice prompt "press 3 to continue this conversation in Welsh"
Apparently what happened is it had been entered on the computer as SORN ! No idea or explination why but she said it was quite common. Might have made for an interesting conversation had I been stopped.
