Ford's Dagenham Dream BBC 4 Now (9pm)
Discussion
The guy who they were talking to, Denis O'Flynn, used to be the Mayor of Havering. I've met him a couple of times.
On work experience in 1990 I spent a day at Dagenham.
The main part I went to was the Paint, Trim & Assembly plant. They were building Fiestas and Sierras then.
Was fascinating to see Fiestas and Sierras going down the same lines for painting. These bodyshells were moving automatically on trolleys at about chest level. They would go into the first part of the paint booth, a guy would spray a colour on the bonnet or roof and it would then go onto the main spray booth and would be sprayed by machine. Was interesting to see Sierras and Fiestas going in one after the other being painted in different colours.
Remember seeing door trims being fitted, the doors were removed from the car on a separate line where all the internals were fitted, they would then join the car further down the line.
Also remember seeing them sorting the alingment of doors will a mallet
and the cars screetching off the end of the production line.
I was on an apprenticeship a couple of years later(only did a year) and we went over to the main pressing/stamping part of the factory. On that occasion we saw them stamping panels for the Transit.
Shame large parts of the factory have now gone
