Tories tackle speed camera rules

Thousands of motorists could be spared bans under Tory plans to axe penalty points for many speeding offences.
Shadow transport secretary Damian Green told The Times most drivers caught by speed cameras should face only fines, not points on their licences. But stricter penalties - such as four or five points and higher fines - would be given for speeding in more dangerous areas, such as outside schools.

Drivers risk losing their licence if they reach 12 penalty points. This means a motorist could be unable to take to the road after just four speeding offences. An estimated two million people received £60 fines and three penalty points in the last year, according to police chiefs.

Many of these were caught by Britain's 4,500 speed cameras. But Mr Green said only about 1,000 areas, where the risk of death was highest, should carry penalty points. He also called for an audit of the country's cameras, to find out which ones actually reduced road accidents and which appeared to be there just to raise money. "If people feel, as they do now, that cameras are just being used to raise revenue then drivers will start to detach the whole concept of cameras from safety," he told the newspaper. "Laws should be properly enforced but the other side of the coin is that the law needs to be respected. "The danger is that millions of people are starting to think that the law is being imposed in an arbitrary way." Mr Green also suggested that any profits from speed camera fines should be reinvested in road safety measures. At the moment, most of the money is kept by police and local authorities to cover the costs of speed enforcement - with the surplus going to the Exchequer. A Conservative Central Office spokesman said the party intended to consult on the plans.

They wouldnt dare do it! Sounds good but Has a polition ever done anything like that. They would shit themselves.
No one would stick their neck out over safety. Look at what happened with the dark visors for motorbikes.

Remember Blair was going to get ris of our ridiculas licenceing laws!

They are all lieing feckers and he's just saying that to get support knowing full well they have no plans yo introduce it.

I agree that all politicians are liars, but at least there is an alternative plan - they just need to keep saying things like this, and Blair will get voted out - after all, the Tories NEED some popular policies if anyone is going to vote for them, and they appear to be identifying areas of concern and making some plans.

It sounds like a breath of fresh air, even it is a cynical vote-grabbing sound bite.

When Tim Collins was Tory transport spokesman (a few months ago) he also said that they would remove scameras unless local authorities could justify them.

Whether or not this latest announcement is cynical or vote grabbing I would rather trust the Tory instincts on this issue than those of the yoghurt knitters on the the government side.

Saw Damien Green on GMTV this morning, he was saying what we've been saying for ages:

"Speed cameras reduce the numbers of traffic police on our roads. This means that drink drivers, drivers on their phones and drivers without MOT's and insurance are getting away with it and are more likely to be the more dangerous drivers anyway"

Who decides which cameras will be point-inducing, and which not?
The same arses who decide where they are being placed at the moment?

Couldnt agree more. But if the existing govmnt are going to do anything about it, first of all they'll have to put together a think-tank, then put it to a committee, then instigate a scamera tsar, then hold a referendum then, when they've wasted all that money and time they'll just forget about it and move on to the next 'hot-topic' without actually doing anthing. Lets wait and see if its in any of the party manifesto's..... I for one will not hold my breath.

It would nt surprise me if they delclared all but one speed camera to be in danger spots and hiked the points fines up on them all, but one. That way they arent lieing and have made more money.

Wouldn't get too excited over this seeming Tory support for 'our views'. E-mailed Mr Green about the S.A.F.E.R. campaign a couple of weeks back and never even got a reply.

Maybe he's only bothered when he's got a national audience.

And would you really expect any pro-car policies fron a Green?

Why would they do that? If they upped the points on all but 1 scamera, you would be able to go through them less and thus make them less £££.

Bang on. The public need to hear this.
It is an obvious point, but people are forgetting it.
