Gas-guzzlers

By NIC CECIL
Political Correspondent

DRIVERS with gas-guzzling motors face forking out £1,000 for road tax under shock new proposals.

Ministers are considering the move to encourage motorists to buy environmentally-friendly cars.

The £1,000 bill would apply to a range of models with high CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions.

They include a £14,100 Ford Mondeo 2 litre 16 valve, a £14,000 Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 litre 16 valve and a £16,300 Rover 75 1.8 T club.

The current top rate of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is just £165. But it would soar by more than 500 per cent in a new sliding scale of tax charges.

Transport Secretary Alistair Darling ordered a study into the tax banding system — known as graduated VED.

MORI researchers discovered that the current system failed to influence people to buy cleaner cars.

They found drivers chose a model based on price, reliability, image, brand loyalty, colour and size — but very rarely CO2 emission levels.

They concluded: “Key players in the industry, as well as drivers, feel that for these initiatives to be taken up they need to hit people in the pocket.”

The report proposed doubling the price between bands or increasing the largest band to £1,000.

The prospect sparked outrage among motoring groups last night.

Paul Watters, of the AA, raged: “It’s ludicrous. Motorists will be furious.”

Targeted ... Ford Mondeo

Edmund King, of the RAC Foundation, said: “This would be a draconian increase and a double whammy on people with big cars. They already pay more at the pumps.”

Shadow Transport Secretary Damian Green warned: “Much higher road tax is on the Government’s agenda as the next phase in the war on motorists.”

Currently the yearly road tax for cars registered before March 1 2001 is £165 if they are over 1549cc and £110 if they are 1549cc or below.

VED for cars registered on or after March 1 2001 ranges from £165 down to just £55 based on CO2 emission levels.

Researchers stated: “Overall, the graduated VED scheme has had minimal impact on the UK car industry.”But they said cleaner motors were chosen for company cars when it was realised they could save on tax.

They suggested CO2 could also be cut by hammering high mileage drivers. Car tax could be incorporated into petrol prices so those who do many miles pay more.

Older cars, which tend to be less clean, could also be driven off the road by making the MOT tougher. But the report warned this could lead to more cars being dumped.

Yep. The British Public would not stand for a 500% increase in tax. They'd have to raise it £60 a year for a few years - then we'd put up with it - like boiling a frog.

Get them OUT!

Hmm, so lets all ride 125cc motorbikes to save on tax and fuel and on an evening and weekends we do nothing. No going out, spending money to keep the economy going. Well we can't since we have no transport to use.

After we have all saved up a wodge of cash we p!ss off overseas.

Modern politics focuses around what is popular and what is not. Rather than falling into the trap of things like the poll tax (little or no public consultation) a lot of things are passed infront of the public using the media - not suggesting that this is right, but it is what happens. As a result we hear of a lot of things being investigated but little happens.....

Can you honestly believe that the government will introduce a graduated VED of up to £1000 for a Ford Mondeo 2.0? Come on get real... the people who drive these things are exactly who vote for them in the first place. Taxing them this way will effectively ruin their chances of a third term in office.... Oh, and remember that you cant pay the VED by installments - its a one off yearly payment.... I cant see many people taking that one.....

Its just a method of public consultation and with the outcry that results they wont do it.... get a grip please...

short of shouting at the radio on my way to work this morning i've not really done anything positive about my frustration/anger at potentially being metaphorically shafted again by Mr Brown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A system that taxes an average petrol car twice as much as a 61(plus) seater BUS could seem rather bonkers (even for them)....

Tossers

Edit: When they tax aircraft which cause many times more damage to the environment due to the altitude they gases are released at then I will momentarily entertain such a proposterous suggestion.

But we couldnt have that could we, would stop the marvellous Wayne and Sharon tourism trade we inflict on Southern Europe

My contempt for this goverment is limitless.

My desire to emigrate is increases each time I hear the Government spouting on about such guff!

It's obvious they simply don't want people to endulge in any sort of enjoyment. Ok, so our cars consume more fuel and produce more emmisions than some, but for many of us they are second cars that do very limited miles each year.

This sort of proposal is discrimination against motoring enthusiasts.... as the thread title suggests... GET THEM OUT!!!!

My Dad drives 40,000+ miles per year not through choice but because he has to to keep his job.

He along with all the others in his company have just received a tax bill for nearly £3000!!! For which the only thing we can think it is for is his company car.

Don't these bunch of fkwits realise that he will be a burden on the state he doesn't drive as he will lose his job as National Sales Manager.

He has worked hard all his life, paid his taxes (and then some more) and when he gets to a good stage in life and job where he is allowed a nice car as a perk of the job he taxed even more.

These munch of fking tossers make me so fking angry!!!!!!!!!!

Outlaw, thats the funniest thing ive read in a long time.
Unfortunately, its that kind of action that will be required to make our feelings thorougly known to this arrogant communist government.

New Labour, it doesnt do what it says on the box, it does what it wants.

Communist dictatorship anyone? Vote accordingly.

You do have a point. Greedy Gordo has several methods of both sounding out new taxes and preparing the country for them. Look at the NI increases: announced a full year before they came into effect. The result? No media storm when it was announced - and no media storm when it was implemented. if he'd done it all at once there would have been riots.

If he wasn't smart he wouldn't be dangerous..

Hey! We're getting an excellent rant on here! More more!

Ranting should be an Olympic event - the Brits are getting so much training at the moment we'd be a dead cert for a Gold..

I do approx 1000 miles a year in one of my gas guzzlers. So then, that's one pound a mile, what great value!

I've been on the edge of emmigrating for a while now (ever since I started coming to PH) and I've never been properly motivated to leave. In some ways, I'm hoping that something this stupid DOES actually happen, just to push me over the edge and out of this f***ing joke of a once great country.
