Residents flatten ugly building

Residents who have lived in the shadow of the "the UK's ugliest building" will have the chance to help demolish it, the council has announced. Work to tear down the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth is to start on Wednesday, after an attempt to make it a listed building failed.

Ten residents chosen at random from those who call the Tricorn hotline will be asked why they want to demolish it.

Whoever gives the best answer will be selected to start the machines running.

The Tricorn was voted the ugliest building in the country in a poll by Radio 4's Today programme.

One listener described it as a "1960s consumer rat-maze".

But it was the subject of a campaign by the Portsmouth Society, who wanted to get the building listed as a national architectural treasure.

At the time, Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South, Mike Hancock, said: "I am delighted that common sense has prevailed in this matter and that we can move as swiftly as possible now on to demolition."

The Tricorn hotline, 023 92899123, is open from 0900 GMT to 2000 GMT on Monday and 0900 GMT to 1400 GMT on Tuesday.

Although I think its ugly in 50 years time would it be looked upon as good architecture?
I wonder if buildings that were pulled down 50-100 years ago that were deemed ugly that we would now find interesting.

Winchester castle was purposely demolished.
I dont think they would purposely destroy a part of history like that now.
Perhaps car parks and shopping precients will one day be a thing of the past and we should keep the tricorn.

Ok....that was my best attempt. Its a bloody eyesore and smells of p!ss (it honestly does!).
Pull the place dwon ASAP!

leave it alone. I say this because I dont live anywhere near it....

(Although I spent 3 years at Uni there and still remember the cheap "everything £1.00) shops which used to occupy it...)

Trellick Tower was given grade II listing a few years back (pile of shite that it is).

Some guy managed to buy his flat off the council for £20k, waited for it's listing to be granted and then promptly flogged it for over £250k to some Architect.

Makes you think if anyone in the housing dept has 2 brain cells to rub together.

Owen Luder designed the Tricorn and also the 'Get Carter' car park in Gateshead.

The Gateshead car park is still standing.

He also designed the Dunston Rocket, near Newcastle.

Ace bloke and he'll be upset that theTricorn is being demolished.

Hmm, difficult one this. The Tricorn is far from beautiful, but it's certainly interesting. You can't preserve everything though, especially when it doesn't meet the needs of the community & business.

However, if you demolished things purely because they're ugly then every new estate in the country should go.

BTW I've never understood the fuss about Trellick Tower. The East End is full of similar towers but they don't get listed because they're not it in chi-chi Notting Hill.
