I'm going in June for 2 weeks 
Thought I'd pass that on, if it's not safe I will be having words with my guide (who happens to be a close mate and lives there Handy eh)
Cheapest way to fly is with KLM via Amsterdam, or at least it is from Newcastle. Have a word with STA Travel - I'm flying out for £338 return they had tickets for £302 as well.

Went there last year and going this..
Not in Cairo though. In a new 5 star resort Taba Heights, right up in the north of the Red Sea. Sanai area.
Many of my friends & family have been. Nile area is pretty dirty, has some trouble and beggers etc. But don't let that frighten you.
A lot of people worry too much, The tourist trade in Egypt is as strong as ever, visitors are still going and are not being frightened away.
Put it this way, when you hear of bombings, gun fights and all the other types of trouble in the region you never really hear of tourist areas being targetted. (bali excluding)
When in Egypt you would generally go to the tourist areas where they have tourist police. It would be the same as going to Manchester.. you would go to the tourist areas and be kept away from Moss side... Coaches are often escorted through the cities by police. The government make the country as safe as humanly possible for tourists as it is their life blood.
It is a beautiful country, steeped in history and wonder, very friendly people and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world.

It's such a waste going all the way to Egypt and sitting on a beach, there's not much point other than to say you have been.
If it's a beach you want you are better sticking with Barbados or similar.
