My wife has just been hit by another car. She was parked and the car reversed out of her space catching the front of my wife's car. The woman stopped but refused to give details claiming we only need the registration number and then swore at my wife and left. So the only details we have are her first name and the registration number of the car. We believe we may know where she works.

Now the damage isn't massive but I don't see why I should accept any damage at all. It was perfect before. The bumper is chipped and will definitely need a bit of filler and a repaint.

She made the comment "it isn't my insurance" so I am slightly worried that she is insured at all. I have checked askmid and the car does appear on the database and the registration matches the model but obviously I don't know her full name and I can't check that anyway.

Incidentally my wife phoned the police on my advice and mentioned about her refusing to give details etc. Their response "you should be able to do it with just the reg plate. We are not interested!".

Now if she had been nice, co-operate and given details etc. I would have sorted it out myself to reduce the cost of the claim (or potentially offer for her to pay in cash). However she wasn't so I don't see why I should put myself out at all.

Thoughts and Anniesdad contact details.

Ring your insurance company. Give them the reg number. Drive to the garage they suggest for getting your car fixed. What's so difficult?

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Hig... - Rule 286 is a MUST i.e. there is legislation requiring this ( RTA 1988 sect 170) and it is an offence not to comply. I'd recommend reporting to the police again with this to hand.

ring your insurance. Ring the police (failing to stop is an offence).

When the other party lie about it, get Europa/Anniesdad involved.

That's what I thought. Hence my surprise when the police said they didn't care that she wouldn't give my wife details. May re-report this.

As for sorting it out myself, last time I had to sort a claim it was an absolute nightmare. Even though my car was parked and hit by a council vehicle it took 9 months to sort. I spent ages getting 3 quotes etc. etc. phoning, chasing and I just don't have time to mess about with it now (taking time of work as the bodyshops are only open certain hours etc.)
