I know there is the classifieds and you could always write that you may be willing to swap for something else, but I think it would be quite hard to find a match, so wondered if Pistonheads should open some sort of Swap Shop, where you can say I have car x, a rough value price of what you think yours is worth, and then people can offer up a swap for their car plus potentially a small amount either way.

What does PH think?

I don't think swops are ever a good idea though an area where like-minded people could sell their cars to each other for an agreed value might work as each would have a bill of sale for a car purchased by a contract. I'm not saying a swop isn't a contract, it just makes it more arbitrary if one party ends up dissatisfied.

I swapped my old car and some cash for my current car. The owner didn't want to keep my old car, but we both agreed that it would be much easier for him to sell due to the larger market for it, so it worked out to be a good deal for both of us.

I meant more along the lines of:

Car to Swap: 250bhp coupe
Rough Value: £2500
Looking for: Small hatch, good fuel economy, Less that 40K miles and 5 years old.

For instance, your may not be bothered what small hatch you get, so don't want to have to trawl through every classified or lose out to a PX at a dealer.

You still officially buy each car, just for a nominal amount like a quid.

Yeah, but what happens if you have a car no one has put down... but if people knew about it they may be willing to swap, for example do people put down "fast 3 door coupe"?

Why not swap the car for money, and then swap the money for another car? That way, you can actually pick which car you get instead of being limited to only ones where the other person wants yours.

I did an eBay swap last year for my winter shed Merc 300CE to a Subaru Impreza turbo 2000 and it was very painless and we both ha described the cars accurately so both parties were happy. Top winter shedding with 4WD!

It has been tried many times here, without success. There is even a wiki for the last attempt.

This is apparently quite common in the modded car scene, where the amount spent just would not be recouped. I know someone who has swapped at least 2 cars, and been happy with both.

I did a swop a while back, range rover supercharged for a 996 x50 through the classifieds, it worked out really well!
