The police chief in charge of traffic in Greater Manchester has been caught speeding along a motorway at 104mph.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Thomas was fined £450 and given six penalty points by North Staffordshire magistrates on Thursday.
He said he sincerely regretted his "error of judgement", but had thought he was driving safely at the time.
Mr Thomas said he remained committed to reducing the number of traffic accidents caused by speeding.
Magistrates heard that Mr Thomas had been clocked doing 104mph on the M6 Toll road near Birmingham.
After appearing in court, he defended his actions on the day.
In a statement he said: "On the day in question, the driving and road conditions were good, and I was part of a group of around 15 cars all doing around the same speed.
"I considered that my manner of driving was safe. However, exceeding the speed limit by this amount is unacceptable and I sincerely regret my error of judgement.
"Excessive speed is a contributory factor in many road traffic incidents and it's everyone's duty to drive safely and at a reasonable speed at all times."
He added: "I remain committed to reducing the number of serious road traffic accidents that occur in Greater Manchester."
A GMP spokesman confirmed: "Assistant Chief Constable Thomas has responsibility for traffic issues at GMP and those responsibilities will remain."
As well as being in charge of roads policing, Mr Thomas is head of divisional policing in Greater Manchester.

Why can't he just say what he's actually thinking - That given the right circumstances, it is perfectly safe to drive at speeds in excess of 100mph.
I very much doubt they'd sack him!
They would sack him. And all the papers would call him some sort of devil worshipping antichrist, then moan at the number of speed cameras. The guy obviously has his head screwed on right. Read his comments again. You can feel the contempt for what he's saying. Fcuking nanny state bollox again

What a frucking hypocritical cock this guy is.
The cock said:
He said he sincerely regretted his "error of judgement", but had thought he was driving safely at the time.
Which suggest that the public announcement of "speed kills" is just really blollocks and that this guy privately believes it.

Considering this is what PHers are continually saying about driving at speeds above the limit BUT based upon good conditions etc I find it immensely hypocritical of this guy.
And if i remember my braking distances from the Highway code, at 104mph the gap should be such between cars that no 'group of 15' could form. So the Cock was also no doubt driving up someone arse at 104mph.

I wish the Cock would explain how driving safely can ever be unacceptable.
What a Cock.

Now correct me if im wrong but isn't speeding a finite offence, i.e if you wern't driving safely you would be charged with careless driving AS WELL
Kind of what Mr 27 is saying in the sense that if you read between the real lines you can actually tell what the guy is thinking, and that speeding and safe driving aren't neccesarily complete opposites.

I was under the impression over 95 was an automatic ban? i shall use his own defense next time a cop stops me for doing a wee bit over the limit!
it does set an interesting presedent I must admit! How can he get 6 points and a £450 fine yet someone else gets a ban?
It could be an interesting thing to see.
Political correctness exemplified perfectly.
What a complete tw@t (the situation the poor officer finds himself in, that is, not the man himself.)
I'm sorry but this is what we've come to; such eco-weenied subservience to such an unthinking zeitgeist that makes fools of those that might otherwise be reagrded as society's heros.
I can fully empathise with this chap's response but it's nonetheless sickiening.
104 mph on that road, excessive? (...but of course, it's the law, so...
)
An absolute shambles.

Exactly. Poor bloke's got a mortgage, so he's got to say the right thing, but on the other hand, there nothing wrong with 104 mph.
Interesting he didn't get the automatic ban.
I notice Brake got in there with some more propaganda
Lets see some evidence that supports the claim that travelling at 104mph on a road with good driving conditions and low traffic volumes GREATLY increases the chance.
If this blokes story is right and 15 or so cars where travelling at roughly the same speed. Surely at least ONE should have buried it into the Armco.
Or is Brake's claim based purely on speculation with no actual evidence to back it up??

A spokesman for anti-speeding campaigners, Brake, said: "Driving at excessive speeds like this greatly increases the chance of a car crash.
"Someone in Mr Thomas' position, who has seen at first hand the consequences of speeding, should know better."
