Fair play for Hyundai and their N gurus for trying and, actually probably in succeeding making a EV 'fun' and something for the actual car and driving enthusiasts to enjoy.

I really like it and in that colour, looks great.

I'm all for these EV 'hot hatches' rather that, than hideous Tesla truck thing..

I quite like these, considering the base cars are absolutely awful.

I think they will suffer savage depreciation, makes no sense as a new PCP as the finance rates are so expensive. I’d wait a year and buy one 3 months old.

Even the salary sacrifice figures sound quite expensive.

Enhanced fakeness isn’t a huge issue to me. My M3 has fake sounds and it sounds good, wife has fake boobs and they look good etc etc… I’d be tempted maybe at some point.
The base cars are one of the best regarded EV’s what makes them awful in your view?

I’ve found the lease deals from companies outside of Hyundai a lot more expensive than the Hyundai dealers. They also have access to immediate stock where as the lease companies are all factory orders

Has anyone reviewed one of these side by side against the Model 3 Highland Performance yet?

Looks like the Hyundai wins in pretty much every category apart from range/efficiency from their individual reviews.

It is not a hot hatch though. It is a 2.2 tonne SUV with a battery pack slung underneath to make it look lower like a hatch back.

No one calls a Range Rover Sport SVR a hot hatch which is basically the same as this thing.

Length

Ionic 5 4634mm (N version 4715mm)
Honda Civic 4594mm
Range Rover Sport 4946mm

The Ionic 5 is much shorter than a RRS and close to a Honda civic.

Since where did I mention length?

The are both 2.2 tonne and around the 600 bhp mark. The Ioniq 5 is the same length as the MK1 RR Sport if you want to get pedantic.

The Civic is some 800kg lighter.

The Civic is quite a funny one and been a debate for years where it actually sits. It’s closer in size to a BMW 3 series (4709mm) or Audi A4 (4762mm) than a traditional family hatchback. In the US they classify the Civic a category up from compact cars (Golf or Focus) as an intermediate car.

A Golf is 4282mm
I30 is 4340mm
S3 4354mm
Focus ST 4378mm

The Ioniq 5 N is longer than an Audi Q5 (4689mm) and BMW X3 (4708mm) for reference.

Even Hyundai calls the standard Ioniq 5 as a CUV.

Realistically the Ioniq 5 N is the second fastest SUV round the Nurburgring behind on the Audi RS Q8 and faster than a Lamborghini Urus and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio for example!

What always makes me smile...is that almost everyone moans when an ICE SUV weighs around 2200kg for example. Yet when an EV weighs around 2200kg everything is fine and dandy though, and folk talk like it weighs about 500kg in comparison! hehe

I just love how an EV gets a free pass on pretty much everything, and I find it all very fascinating to be honest.

The current Honda Civic isn't a compact hatch of old, it's a large 4 door hatch:

The Ioniq 5 N is 10+cm longer than that (and wider and taller). In fact I was behind an Ioniq 5 yesterday, it really is a hatch scaled up to SUV proportions - it's a huge and fat bloater, like many EVs.

The problem is as much about the weight distribution are anything.

ICE SUVs (especially diesel ones) have a hulking great lump of engine high up and at the front which makes for poor handling. EV's have at least 500Kg very low down and in the centre of the chassis, much better for grip, balance and handling.

There is an argument that for ultimate handling you might be better off with a battery pack stacked behind the driver in a mid engined type of configuration (which is what Lotus are doing) but you can't compare an EV SUV and an ICE SUV of similar weights, they're very different as anyone who has hustled an EV SUV will tell you.

I can chuck my EV6 GT round corners way faster than our old diesel Volvo XC90 (which was actually lighter).

It's also why Ariel Atoms for example, despite being quite light, don't handle that well on track (compared to cars with a lower engine position, they're still great fun) due to the engine being so high up and at the back.

You arent bench pressing either so dont worry about it ?

Its low down as Mr 740 mentioned, plus they have torque that makes the weight seem almost inconsequential to the drivetrain in a lot of cases, I mean, huge hulking SUV cracking sixty off in 3 seconds or less in some cases, thats just bloody witchcraft.

If you are buying an SUV, weight obviously isnt that much of a concern in the decision anyway, none of them are much under two tons and lets face, it they are a rare sight on circuits.

I do think that over time, as battery tech improves (it has to) then EVs will get lighter, achieving parity, and maybe one day actually being lighter than the equivalent ICE.

Apparently capable of 2 laps of the ring at full beans. No sweat. Charge it and go again for 2 more. Even the latest Taycan can't do that.

We've got an EV6 which is the same E-GMP platform underneath. It does a fair job at masking its weight, but if you get the back to step out a bit or you need to brake in a hurry, then the mask does slip! It also nails its rear tyres (it is only a RWD model so to be expected perhaps).

I saw this N being tested maybe sometime in 2022 when visiting their massive R&D place in S,Korea. The "N boys" (which is what I think they called themselves, even the girls!) have their own little development group. They had their own Manga-style T-shirts, they were all young and full of energy. Add to this that they've not really got much heritage to carry forward, no iconic engines, no iconic models then they've really been able to just let it all go and focus on what they want it to be. They're having fun and it shows.

KIA & Hyundai are rapidly becoming enthusiasts companies, in the same way that Honda are a lot of the time (remember the 'skunk works' team that developed tech NSX?)

Who would have though a Korean car company would be focussing on the things that enthusiasts care about?

After weeks of dicking about with our Sal.Sac. scheme (is the N available, is it not available, no-one knew! It was and then it wasn't... Really quite awkward tbh.) it finally turns out it is.

Now... How do I sell it to someone who has zero interest in cars as the 2nd driver biglaugh

In all seriousness, it looks like anyone that actually drives one finds it a great laugh to drive. Big grins all around and to be honest, aside from all the other discussions going on about it, if it's fun to drive then it's fun to drive.

Before my test drive, I was worried about the size and to some degree the weight I suppose and how it would feel to drive compared to my Fiesta ST, plus it's my first real EV drive and it's my first automatic and all these other things, but after being in it for 5 minutes that all just went away. I just know I want one.
