Are there any regulations about what style of safety harnesses can or cannot be used on public roads? Does anyone have any reccomendations for multi point harnesses?

I've been looking into this a little bit and when I was looking on Demon Tweeks it seems that the motorsport ones have a round fighter pilot style buckle while the max power versions have a normal seatbelt style buckle. I'm hoping that this doesn't mean the only harnesses that are road legal have that style of buckle, because frankly, all of them are shit.

I've had proper four point harness in my car for the last six years or so (twist-to-release Luke harness from DT). The only problem was MOT time when they wanted to see e-marked belts.
The cheaper type seem to be e-marked but with the more flash harnesses you have to leave the old belts in for the MOT.

The maxy ones, if you're talking to me I want the fighter style ones in mine. I've phoned Demon Tweeks and they said some motorsport ones are approved. Ones that are 'E' marked. The only problem is it doesn't tell you on the website which ones are

Actually, that's a good point, I coule always leave the old ones in. Deltaf, where could I mount the harnesses in the integrale? And ideas? I've got no cage in at the moment.

I've found that a lot of the competition harnesses, Luke, Sabelt etc are not road legal as they have exposed metal buckles and metal aircraft type fastening. To be road approved they have to have these parts covered in plastic with rounded edges etc. Also noticed that the Demon Tweeks website is pretty useless for finding this out!

A motorsport-friendly cop told me you need to have an E-marked seat belt/harness to get through the MOT. Never had the E-mark checked on mine in fifteen years though. Most harnesses aren't E-marked (although a few are) so technically you would need to retain the std seat belt as well as the harness. It is normally easy to do this. Strongly recommend you go for a rotary release harness, the clubman style pushbutton release is very awkward to use in practice. Make sure you get the buckle on the correct side to avoid trapping it in the door - normally towards the center of the car.

Had Luke 4 point harnesses in my road Caterham for 12 years with no MoT probs. Central push release button, and i can see what you mean, in an emergency you push the button and your belly just squiges in!!

I have a 2003 Demon Tweeks motorsport calalogue somewhere, but I can't find it!!!!!!

Their website is useless, but the shop is quite good. Its probably a bit of a trek for most of you guys though!.

Harnesses are prefectly legal for the road. They don't have to be "e" marked. An old British Standards "kite" mark should be sufficient (see Note 3. section 5, page 4 of MOT tester's manual if any testers give you a hard time over it!). You need to be able to release them with a single movement of one hand but you can use as many hands as you like to put one on.

they will come with detailed instructions but as a general rule the fronts can use the existing seatbelt anchor points although you might need longer bolts if you intend to retain the existing belts for MOT purposes. The rears should not be anchored to close to the seat, there is an angle from the back of the seat that you should not mount below but as a guide between the rear seat squab and the rear seat back or onto the rear shelf (metal shelf), if you have rear belts you could use their anchor points.

best have a word with the fitters as they would be the best to advise

Another thing, I have heard good things about the 3 inch harnesses as they spread the load over a wider area should the worst happen.

Personally I would go for Sparco 4 point Pro Racer Saloon, 3inch lap and sholder straps and quick release buckle £110 (less dreaded VAT from Demon Tweeks), probably would not look to cool in the touring

Hmm Molly. Well speaking for meself, ive used the screw in type eyebolts that came with the Sabelts i got for Der Golf.
Just replaced the standard ones with the eye bolts and clips the harnesses straight to em...
Oops, oh forgot to tell, i had, well did, weld two for each seat for the crotch straps, welded em to the self fabricated seat mounting bars.
dont REALLY think ya wanna be doin that in the Integrale tho!
As for "e " markings...dunno! Only markings mine have got are FIA approved on em...if its good nuff for them..and all that!

Bloody hell Deltaf, you took your time Cheers mate. I'm figuring the lap belts will go on the existing seatbelt mounts but what about the shoulder belts? What did you do with them? And more importantly, what can I do?

And Joust, I've seen the spoiler but I didn't realise you were that much of a Maxy P boy, have you got blue neons too
