You can.

My son was on the V5 of his Fiat Punto at 16.

He's at university now and just renewed his insurance himself on his Corsa. Refused telematics and has paid for it all. I'm quite proud of him. I was going to fork out for it. biggrin

If you insure your daughters car in your name with her as a named driver it is known as FRONTING, insurers are very wary of this and will charge more money. Yes once your daughter is 17 insure the car in her name with you as named drivers.

As mentioned before the risk as a new driver is a lot more than a provisional learner driver hence the premiums are alot higher sometimes 4 times higher.

Have a blackbox fitted to the car but it is a personal choice, for my daughter we did not do this as it was approx £100 more for the year.

Cheers all.
Got 3 hour insurance now for £18 and car taxed for £35.
Car will be in her name and she will be the main driver on insurance with myself and wife as named drivers which goes live at start of June.

Now I'm looking forward to spending a couple of days detailing it and my boot is loaded up with various cleaning products, machine polisher, buckets, towels, brushes etc so it will (hopefully) look top notch when she sees it smile
I've just checked - my daughter had her name on the v5 2 weeks before she was 17 and it was insured in her name with me as a named driver via Collinswood at the same time . c £300p.a

£18/ 3 hours is the equivalent of £52k p.a !! And it won't be insured if it is stolen now .

The other advantage of going with one company from the outset is that your daughter will earn that very important 1 year NCB quicker even if she doesn’t pass her test for say 11 months.

We did similar for my daughter.

Car (Yaris) was registered in my name, so that when i taxed it the confirmation came to me, not my daughter
I could then insure it with me as main driver (£140 for the year with Direct Line, which I thought was a bargain as i had no no-claims bonus to use on it)
Once it was her birthday, we got provisional driver insurance as an add-on policy for my daughter (this is entirely separate from teh car insurnce, and is from Adrian Flux). The advantage being that it can be done for any period of time rather than a year, so if you don't know how long she will take to get a test you can extend as necessary.
Once she passed her test, we took out a new policy in her name (Admiral) with her as main driver and me as a named driver. I cancelled my insurance, and was pleased to get a £60 refund.

Only if you tell them you are the main driver when in reality your daughter is. It's perfectly fine to insure the car in your name with daughter as a named driver so long as you tell the insurers your named driver is also the main driver.
