Im moving away from speed and heading more towards a nice sounding car.

My mate has an old school clio 1.2 8v and the pipe to the airbox has come off and it actually sounds quite good between 3-5500 revs, and although he revs it a lot it always gets 40mpg plus.

what other small engined petrols could sound good with a slight airbox mod/panel filter, be nippy on the road, good handling and return 35mpg with a lead foot?

The 1st Gen new MINI with the 1.6 Tritec engine always sounded good. Even the non supercharged Cooper.

The 1 litre 3-cylinder Focus Eco-thing sounds quite growly for what it is.

Back to a time before time began, Alfa put a nice sounding boxer engine in the 'Sud' That sounded rather nice. smile

1.8 in the Elise sounds nice and rorty. The wife's Twin Air Fiat is not bad either.

As Fire99 says, the Alfa Boxer. Lancia V4 in the Fulvia has a rather distinct, metallic, exhaust note.

I liked the sound of the 2.0 Twinspark in my 01 Alfa GTV and my FN2 Type R makes a good Vtec noise

Small engines generally sound better than large engines due to their (usually) greater rev range. Pretty much anything with three cylinders can be made to sound good. Aygo it is biggrin

Aygo on its limits. I love driving them because they really are like go-karts. The fun factor is driving it on its limits!

Cylinder count/configuration is more important than size
