Megane 1.9 dci turbo failure?
Discussion
Alright guys.
Friend of mine has a 1.9 dci megane (05 reg I think) which sounds like the turbo's blown. Havn't had a look at it yet but he said he was driving home from work and the car just didnt feel like it had any power, was smoking alot and there was a strange sound from the engine which was lower pitched than the normal turbo whistle.
Am I right in thinking this is turbo failure? If so are they hard to replace, is it a dooable DIY job?

hmmm maybe. most common failure for turbos is the bearings i think, but if it was this then it would've probably revved up on its own due to the engine burning the oil
never changed a turbo myself, but if it was the bearings that had failed then theres a bit more to it that just replacing the turbo.. the intercooler and exhaust are both likely to be filled with oil too

Make sure you are sat down and Google "Renault DCi turbo failure".
More common than a common thing in a group of other common things.
Yes, it is possible to do at home if you have the skill, inclination and the right sort of tools - as is anything. Not a job for someone if you haven't done anything mechanical before though.

Turbo failure on the post-03 models is actually quite rare (prior to that, just about any F9Q engine would blow the turbo sooner or later as it was very poorly designed).
It could be the turbo or it could be a multitude of things ranging from something quite minor to major so to be honest it is silly to speculate without a proper diagnosis.

There are quite a few listed on ebay.
New ones seem to range from £200-£600 - so perhaps not as much as you though then??
